Description

(No Model.) v
, O. J. PETERSON.
LID HOLDER,
No. 498,569. Patented May 30, 18-93.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. PETERSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISOONSIN.
LID-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,569, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed January 9, 1893. Serial No. 457,775- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. PETERSON, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description,
of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lid holders, the object of the same being to provide a portable holder adapted to be secured to the edge of a kettle, and having means to secure a lid thereto in such manner that the same may be raised and lowered at pleasure.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.
With the above ends in view, my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a kettle with the top in place, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of metallic clamps.
A and B represent two clamps of stiff metal of any desired species, which are provided with the projecting flanges a and b. A coil spring 0 is located between the clamps A and B, as shown, with its free ends bearing upon the inner faces of the clamps. The spring is retained in position by means of a rod D which passes through the same and is secured to the flanges a and b.
The clamp A is provided near its lower end with the bails c to which is suitably hinged a clasp E, the same being preferably made of spring metal.
The upper ends of the clamps A and B are inclined rearwardly to insure the lid a rest in upright position when the same is raised.
In operation it will be seen that the clamps A and B are secured to the edge of the kettle and the clasp E receives and retains the lid. Thus it is very simple to raise the lid for inspection of the contents of the kettle, and the matter thereon will be conveyed back into the kettle, thereby preventing waste and the spreading of grease over the range or floor.
Another advantage appears from the fact that the holder may be applied to any vessel not employing a hinged lid.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 In a lid holder, clamps having a coilspring between them and means for securing the clamps together, of a spring clasp secured to one of said clamps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
