UNITED STATES PATENT DEEICE.
ALBERT L. NORTH AND HALLECK I'IOVE, OF PATRIOT, INDIANA.
BARREL-HEAD HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,420, dated December 31, 1889.
Application filed March 28, 1889A Serial No. 305,201. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Beit known that we, ALBERT L. NORTH and" HALLECK HOWE, of Patriot` in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Head Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention consists in a new and improved barrel-head holder, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a barrel with Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device detached; and Fig. i is a View of a modification of this device, hereinafter referred to.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates a barrel, to which our invention is here shown applied. i
B indicates the holder, which may be formed of spring-wire or any other kind of wire. The holder is preferably formed of a single piece of wire.
C indicates the head-clamp at the lower outer part of the holder, which clamps the barrel-head A in the holder. This clamp is Worked or given its tension bythe loops or springs G, formed at the lower end of each side of the holder, as shown. These lower ends of the holders can be formed with one loop, as shown, or two or more, as we may think necessary; or for a cheaper holder these loops can be left off entirely, as shown in Fig. 4, the tension or spring being given to the head-clamp, to retain the barrel-head in position, by curving the sides of the clamp in to bring its top closer 'to the sides D, as clearly The sides D of the holder extend up, and are curved, as shown, so as to make `the holder iit the outside curve of the barrel, and also to aid in holding the barrelhead so that it will not be in the way in placing the barrel among a number of others.
E E indicate opposite loops or rings on the sides D, near the upper ends of the same, which may be either turned in the wire in making the holderor else made separate and F indicates the clamp to clamp or hold the h holder to the barrel, pressing against the inside of the barrel, and made curved, as shown, to lit the rinside curve of the barrel, giving the clamp more surface to bear against; also, the ends of the wire forming the entire holder meet at the middle of this clamp, passing into a tin sleeve G, in which they are soldered.
The upper end of each side D is formed with a curve or loop H H, that passes over the top edge of the barrel, and they are curved so as to act as springs to press the clamp F in against the inner side of the barrel, holding the holder fast and solid.
In operation, the head of a barrel being removed, the holder is attached to the top of the barrel, as shown, the loops H I-I fitting over the top and the clamp F holding it iirmly in position. The pieces composing the barrel-head are then placed behind the headclamp C. It will be seen that the holder will hold the head of a barrel compactly and securely, so that it cannot get lost until the barrel is empty. The holder is not in the Way, so that the barrels can be set against each other without requiring any more room. It is simple, cheap, and durable. It will keep the barrel-heads oitl the floor and prevent them from getting broken or lost. rThe barrel-head will always be with the barrel when it is wanted, and the invention can be adjusted to any barrel of any size, large or small. The holder can be used on any number of barrels, one after the other, and will pay for itself by saving one barrel-head. It is neat and never in the way, and can either be adjusted to the barrel or else the heads may be put in place in the holder and the holder hung on the wall or in any convenient place.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a barrel-head holder, a wire frame IOO curved at its lower end to form au outer spring-head clamp C, the sides of which are curved in to bring its top closer to the sides D of the holder, and curved atits upper end to form an inner retaining-clamp, substantially as set forth.
2. A barrel-head holder formed with the head-clamp, the spring-loops for the same, and Jhe retainingelzunp, substantially as set fort-h.
3. A barrel-head holder formed with the head-clamp, the spring-loops for the same, the curved side pieces, and the curved retainingclamp, substantially as sei forth.
4. A barrel-head holder, formed of a single Wire curved to forni the head-clamp, the
Vspring-loops for the same, the"eurved side pieces, the curved retaininghelalnp, and the metal sleeve soldered on the ends of the Wire, substantially as set forth.
5. A barrel-head holder formed with th head-clam p, the spring-loops for the same, the Curved side pieces having the loops near juheir upper ends, and the curved retaining springolamp, substantially as set forth.
