I. J. MILLER.
' BOX FASTENER- NO. 318,781. Patented May 26, 1885.
Jaac %aw zm ATTORNEYS nrrnn Sra'rns HATE'I OFFICE.
ISAAC J. MILLER, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY J. IVIGGS, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-FASTENER.
S'JPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,781, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed August 16, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the springs, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view.
The invention is a device for automatically fastening down the lid of a box or packingcase, the said lid being removable from the box. 7
The invention is in attaching leaf springs to clips secured to the edges of the lid in such manner that when the lid is in position lugs on the inner surfaces of the springs will enter proper openings in the sides of the box and hold the lid securely in place. The clips stand vertically downward from the side edges of the lid and fit snugly against the sides of the box. Each of the springs is attached by one end to the outer surface of a clip, and has at the other end, standing at right angles from its inner surface, a lug which passes through an opening made for its accommodation in the clip, and engages a similar opening in the side of the box.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the box or packing-case having in its sides near their upper edges the longitudinal openings or slots to a. The slots at a may be arranged opposite each other, or may be made near corners lying diagonal to each other across the box.
B is the lid, having firmly fixed to and depending from its side edges the clips I) b,which, when the lid is in place, fit snugly and somewhat tightly against the sides of the box. I) b are slots or openings in the clips similar to the slots a a, over which they lie when the lid is in position.
and lower surfaces of the clip, as shown.
Vhen the slots a a are near diagonal corners of the box, one of the springs necessarily occopies a reversed position to the other.
D D are finger openings or recesses cut on the lower outer edges of the clips I) b, by means of which recesses the lugs can be drawn out of engagement with the slots a a and the lid released.
\Vhen the lid is pushed over the top of the box, thelugs will spring into engagement with the slots a a, and when it is desired to unclose the box the springs and attached lugs are drawn outwardly by the finger inserted into the recesses D D. The lid is then easily slipped off.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a box having in its sides proper slots or openings, a removable lid, and spring bars or plates secured by one end to the lid, and provided on the other end with lugs which enter the slots in the box and hold the lid securely in place, substantially as specified.
2. In a packingbox, the combination of the box A, provided with the slots at a, the lid B, having secured to its side edges the clips I) I), provided with the slots 1) b and fingerholds D D, and the springs O 0, provided with the lugs c c, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC J. MILLER.
