CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 13, 1906.;
Application filed August 31; 1905. Serial No. 276,645
lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON LEE BLooM- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro ,-in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in means for crating the leaves or fills of extensible tables for the purpose of shipping; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
j The object of the invention is to provide a simple inex ensive clamping device which may be quic ly secured to a plurality of table leaves or fills for the purpose of clamping them together and forming a crate in which they may be ship ed at comparatively small expense and wit out danger of becoming scratched or marred.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichnum er of table leaves or fills clamped together by my improved clamps so as to form a shipping-crate. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through portions of theleaves or fills and one of the. clamps, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the clam s. 1
Referring to the drawings by c aracters, 1 denotes my im roved clamping device which is ada ted to Ee secured upon two or more table eaves or fills A, as clearly shown in 1 and 2. The clamp 1 isof substan- U shape and is preferably formed from same, as shown in Fig. 3. A longitudinallyextending rib 2 is formed in both the ends 3 clamp for the purpose of strengthening the same; but, if desired, this strengthening-rib may be omitted. I
In using the clamps they are applied to the four corners of the stack of table leaves or fills A and are placed thereon so thatone side eaves A, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The ends 3 of the clamps are adapted to engage the outer faces of the two end leaves or fills of the stack, which faces are the under sides or bottoms of said fills or leaves, and the body portions 4 of the clamps engage the side edges of the leaves or fills, as shown. The ends 3 of the clamps may be of any desired or the space between the inner faces of said ends corresponds to the number of fills or leaves in the stack.
If desired, a packing 6 of any descrlptlon may be placed between the fills or leaves to prevent them from being scratched or marred.
. In order to secure the clamps upon the fills or leaves, 1 preferably employ shor.tscrews 7 and pass them throu h apertures formed in the clamps. One 0 these apertures 8 is screws 7 to enter the bottom or under face of one or more of said openings or apertures 8 are arranged in the body portion 4 so that the screws inserted therein will enter the side edges of'the intermediate leaves of the stack. These openings 8 are preferably arranged in the same longitudinal plane and adjacent to the inner side edge 9 of the clamp, as clearly shown in the. drawings.
i The construction, use, and advantages of the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that by providing four of the clamps 1 upon the four corners of a stack of table leaves or fills and securing them in the manner shown said stack may be readily ship ed with little or no danger of the leaves or ls being scratched or marred. By arranging the openings 8 adjacent to one side edge so that the other side edge of the clamp projects beyond theends of the leaves or fil s the latter will be protected.
Owing to the simple construction, the clamps may be manufactured at a very small cost and may be quickly and e'asilya plied to a stack of leaves or fills to form a s ppingcrate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clamp for securing together the leaves or fills of extensible tables or the like, comprising a; substantially U -shaped. metal body adapted to fit over the side edges of a stack of fills and to project beyond the ends of the formed in each of the ends 3 to permit the.
length, and the length of. the body portion 4 one of the end fills or leaves of the stack, and
the invention will be readily understood from same, the ends of said body having aper- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set tures to receive screws to enter the outermost my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 1o fillllsbof the stack, and the central portion of nesses. t e od havin an a erture to receiveascrew 1 5 to entei one or the intermediate fills of the MILTON LEE BLOOMBLR'G' stack, said apertures being arranged nearer to Witnesses: one side of the clamp than to its opposite side, F. H. NICHOLSON, substantially as shown and described. I. H. MGCALL.
