SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 616,000, dated December 13, 1898.

Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM LOWRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sabougla, in the county of Calhoun and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Slats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for holding slats on bedsteads, whereby the slat may be disposed at any location along the side boards and held securely against lateral movement.

More specifically the invention consists in the provision of slats for bedsteads to the ends of which are secured plates which extend a slight distance below the under surface of'the slat, said plates having a series of sharp teeth along the lower end of each plate, whereby the said notches may bite into the side rail and hold the ends from sliding thereon.

The invention will be clearly understood when taken in connection with the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of the bedstead with two slats held in position by my novel device for holding the ends to the side rail. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the slats, showing the two plates at the ends thereof.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the side rails of the bedstead, of ordinary construction, which is free from recesses which are usually provided for the reception of the ends of the slats to prevent the latter from moving on the said side rail. A are supporting-bars secured to the inner faces of the said rails and upon which the slats are designed to rest. ends the plate B, which plates extend down a slight distance below the under surface of the slat and have a series of teeth b, provided to bite into the upper edge of the side rail A on either side of the bedstead. It will be noted by this construction that the slats may be disposed at any location on the side rails, which side rails are strengthened by the absence of the usual recesses provided to receive the ends of the slats. The teeth will bite into the rail, and while they will prevent any sliding movement to the rails they will also have a tendency to hold the side boards from lateral spreading, as will be noted.

I am aware that it is common in the art to construct bedsteads having plates secured to their ends, which plates are adapted to rest in recesses in the side rails of the bedstead and prevented from sliding longitudinally on the side rails by means of recesses cut in the side rails to receive the ends of the slats. Hence I make no claim for such a construction. The teeth of the plates entering the bars A serve'to prevent both endwise and lateral movement of the slats, and the dispensing with recesses in the side rails avoids harbor for vermin.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

The combination with the side rails of a bedstead, and supporting-bars on the inner faces thereof, of a slat having secured to each end thereof a plate covering the end, with its lower edge serrated and projecting beyond the lower face of the slat with the teeth entering the upper faces of the supporting-bars and holding the'slat with its underface against the upper faces of the supporting-bars and securing the slat against lateral and endwise movements, substantially as shown and described.
