NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BAILEY, OF ELLISVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,108, dated October 25, 1898.
' Application filed June1'7, 1898. Serial No. 683,662. (Nomodeh).
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BAILEY, of Ellisville, in the county of Jones and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to the construction of the side rails of a bedstead and the manner of attaching the slats to the said rails.
The object of the invention is to provide a means whereby a simple, economic, and durable support for the slats may be economically and readily attached to the side rails of a bedstead, the support for the slats being of such character that it will not harbor vermin and will add materially to the strength of the side rails.
Another object of the invention is to provide tips for the ends of the slats, adapted for engagement with the said supports on the side rails, the slats when placed in position serving to tie the side rails together wherever a slat is placed, thus adding materially to the strength and steadiness of the complete bedstead.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a side rail of a bedstead having the improvement ap plied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the side rails and through the supporting device and also a vertical section through a portion of a slat connected with the support, and Fig. 3is a bottom plan view of a portion of one of the slats.
Arepresents the side rails of a bedstead, and B the end clamps for the said side rails. The clamps B are secured to the inner faces of the rails, and the lower ends of the clamps are bent upwardly to form a gutter 10. A gutter 11, preferably of metal, extends from one end clamp to the other, matching with the gutters in said clamps, said parts forming a continuous gutter. Both the clamp-gutters and the main or intermediate gutter 11 are channel or V shaped in cross-section. The main gut ter 11 is secured to the side rail at its lower edge by means of screws 12 or their equivalents.
Each slat 13 is provided with an angular metal tip 14 at each end, one member of each tip being secured to the under face of the respective slat and the other member extending slightly beyond the end of the slat downwardly and outwardly. The outwardly-extending members of the tips 14 are adapted to enter and fit snugly in the gutters 10 and 11. The head and foot slats have bearing directly downward 011 the end clamps and will tend largely to hold the said clamps in position in the headboard and the footboard.
It is evident that each slat serves as a tie for the side rails, and that the side rails are not only strengthened by the attachment, but may be readily cleaned, and that no depressions are made in the wood liable to serve as nests for Vermin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bedstead having a side rail provided at each end with a clamp, each clamp having at its lower end an inwardly and upwardly turned portion forming .a gutter, a main gutter secured to the side rail at the inner face thereof and matching with the gutters of the clamps, the said parts forming a continuous gutter, slats adapted to be supported on the side rails, and angular tips for the slats, each tip comprising an arm secured to the respective slat, and also comprising a downwardly and outwardly projecting arm adapted to engage in the said continuous gutter.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BAILEY.
