the bedpost and connecting-rod in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a bed with my invention applied.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in corner-fastenings for beds, the object being to dispense with separate pins or fastening-collars on the bedposts and to use instead thereof the connecting-rods which are commonly employed to tie the bedposts together. With this object in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as will be hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a metal bedpost, and 2 is the connecting-rod serving to tie the two bedposts at the head or the foot of the bed together.
3 is a casting to which the rail-angle 4 (or the tubular rail, as the case may be) is secured. Casting 3 is provided with hooks 5 for taking in the rod 2, these hooks, as shown in Fig. 2, being laterally displaced with respect to the casting. In line with the rail 4 there are two bearing-points 6, located below and above the hooks 5, so that when the rail is secured in position the casting engages the post above and below the hook 5, making with the engagement of hook 5 with rod 2 a three-pointed bearing. Casting 3 is strengthened by suitable webs and flanges, as shown, and by having two hooks 5 it is obvious that the rail can be turned end for end to reverse the angle 4, if desired. Where a tube is used instead of the angle 4, only one hook is necesessary, as there will be no occasion to reverse the tube.
By referring to Fig. 3 it will be observed that by connecting the rails 4 by cross-pieces arranged at their ends a frame will result, which frame is desirable in certain classes of beds or cots in lieu of the removable side rails. The construction of the frame, to the end rails of which are connected the woven-wire or canvas mattress, is so well understood that I deem it unnecessary to illustrate the same in the drawings.
I am aware that changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
