Description

No. 687,238. Patented Nov; 26, IQUL 'J.-JOHNSON.
BED SLAT SUPPORT. (Application filed m @1901.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
JACOB JOHNSON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BED-SLAT SUPPORT.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,238, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed July 5, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J noon JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Bed-Slat Support; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, attention being called to the accompanying drawings, with the referencenumerals markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the means whereby the mattress-supporting slats of bedsteads are supported on the side rails of a bedstead.
The object of the invention is to provide a device which for sanitary reasons and cleanliness presents certain advantages against existing devices now used for the same purpose.
In the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims following is found a full description of the invention, together with its parts and construction, which latter is also illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 shows in a perspective view a part of a bedstead viewed from the inside. Fig. 2 shows part of a top View of a bedstead. Fig.
3 is a perspective View, enlarged to practically full size, of one of my bed-slat supports or brackets constructed as contemplated by my invention; and Fig. 4 shows a top view of the same device as it appears when attached in position. Fig. 5 shows the blank of such a device when made of sheet metal.
In the drawings, 7 is part of one of the two ends of a customary bedstead, and 8 is part of one of the two rails, and which ends and rails when attached to each other form the upright parts of the bedstead complete.
9 represents the slats upon which the mattress or bedding is supported and which slats are carried by the side rails, resting on brackets 10, secured to the inside of these latter. These brackets or supports are of suitable metal, castor wrought, or they may be of malleable iron. They consist of the support 10 proper, presenting when in position a hori zontal flat surface upon which the ends having the slats rest, and of the upwardly-pro Serial No. 671084. (No model.)
jecting flanges 11 at each of its ends, which confi ne the slatsto the support and prevent them from leaving the same sidewise. From 5 5 one ofthe upright edges of each of these flanges there project again in lengthwise direction-"what is, parallel to the rail or to the sides of support 10*other flanges 12, which have perforations 13 to permit passage of nails or screws whereby the supports are fastened to the inside of the bed-rails.
In order to prevent as much as possible the presence of corners or spaces where dust could accumulate and which might afford a hiding- 6 5 place for insects, supports 10 are cut out between their ends, as shown at 14, by concaving orcurving'out one'of their longer sides, providing thus an open space between them and the inside of the bed-rails and limiting the contact with this latter to flanges 12. The presence of spaces and interstices where insects might abide are thus reduced to a-minimum, which is the leading feature of this invention. Instead of having flanges 11 arranged at right angles to support 10 or side rails 8 one or the two might be converging, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the space between their outer ends is reduced against the'space between their inner ends near the side rail of the bed. By cutting the ends of the slats 9 accordingly and as shown in Fig. 2 they, in conjunction with these converging flanges, serve as ties to hold the side rails of the bed rigidly to each other and prevent any tendency of them to spread. They may all be this way, or a number of the form shown in Fig. 3 might be usedin connection with some of those shown in Fig. 4 and serving, in conjunction with the supported slats, as ties. In 0 such case one of this latter form near each end and one in the middle might be sufficient. Fig. 5 shows the shape of a blank when these devices are out, stamped, and shaped out of sheet metal and which blank embodies all 5 parts and necessary flanges of the. device.
Having-described my invention,I claim as new-- 1. In a bedslat support, the combination of the flat horizontal support 10, upturned flanges Ioe 11, 11, at its ends and attaching- flanges 12, 12, projecting outwardly and in lengthwise direction, one from one of the upright edges of each of flanges 11, said attaching-flanges being in line with one of the sides of fiat support 10, which side is concaved or curved out between its ends and the attaching-flanges thereat so that no other parts or surfaces except these latter come in contact with the bedstead.
2. The blank for a sheet-metal bed-slat support consisting of the central portion 10, curved on one side, the rounded extensions 11, 11 and the additional perforated exten- 1o sions 12, 12, projecting laterally from the curved side.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
J AOOB JOHNSON. Witnesses:
O. SPENGEL, ARTHUR KLINE.
