NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES AUGUSTUS JENKENS, OF NElV-BERNE, NORTH OAROLTNA.
ADJUSTABLE BEDSTEAD.
SPECIIICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,360, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed November 13, 1885. Serial No. 182,710. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES AUGUSTUS JENKENS, of New-Berne, in the county of Craven and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Bed stead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable bedstead which can be adjusted for use as a crib, a double crib, or as a full size bedstead.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters (f reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of myimproved bedstead. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same adjusted as a double crib. Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the same adjusted as a single crib. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are detail views showing the connections between several parts hereinafter described.
The bedstead is provided with the four corner-posts A, and with the two intermediate posts, 13, in the sides, which posts B only extend up to the top of the side rails, O, having end hooks, D, which are passed into recesses in the sides of the posts A B. The two posts B are united by the cross-piece E. The legs A are united in pairs by the cross-pieces or end pieces, F, at the ends of the bed. The side rails, C, have the inside rabbets, G, for supporting the slats H, which rabbets may be notched in the usual manner.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the top edge of the cross-piece E, uniting the intermediate posts, B, is provided with a recess, so that the said crosspiece will not project above the slats.
The head and foot pieces J and K may be constructed as railings, as lattice-work, or as solid panels, as may be desired, and are hung by open hook-hinges L to the top edges of the end or cross pieces, F. Sliding bolts M are provided on the said head and foot pieces J l and K, and their ends can be passed into apertures in the corner-posts and hold the said head and foot pieces raised. An ornamental top piece, Q, can be held by dowel-pins or other analogous devices on the top edge of the head-piece J.
\Vhen a double crib is to be formed. the ex tensions Rare placed upon the posts B, which extensions are united by the railing S, held on them by hooks and eyes. The posts A and the extensions R are united by the railings T, having hooks which are passed into the eyes U on thepostsAandextensionsR. 'lheornamental top piece, Q, is removed.
To form a single crib, the four posts A A are united by two side rails, G, the end pieces, F, and the railing T, the head and foot pieces J and K being provided in the usual manner. The extensions R are held on the intermediate legs, B, by pins on the lower ends of the extensions and passed into inortises in the tops of the legs B. j
I am aware that an adjustable bedstead has been provided with extensible side and end bars, and also with extensible slats. Short intermediate legs were also placed on the side bars, and I do not claim such a bedstead as of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bedstead, the combination, with the corner-posts A, united by cross-pieces, of the intermediate posts, B, united by the cross piece E, the rails O, hung on the posts A and B, the extensions R on the posts B, and the railing S, uniting them, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a bedstead, the combination, with the corner-posts A. united by the end pieces, l of the intermediate posts, B, united by the cross-piece E, the extensions R, united by the railing S, the head and foot pieces J and K, and the railings T, hung on the corner-posts A and the extensions R, substantially as herein shown and described.
