Description

(No Modem H. G. TRAP-GER. :BEDSTEAD BRACKET.
Patented Nov. 19, 1895.
INVENTOH Anon/VH8.
llllllllllllllllllhllWllllHlH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GODFREY TRAEGER, OF PORTERSVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
BEDSTEAD-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,207, dated November 19, 1895.
Application filed July 3, 1895. Serial NO- 554,879. (No model.)
ployed in lieu of the ordinary slats for sup-' porting the mattress, springs, &c. in place in the bedstead; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be removably secured to the angular inner portion of the bed-post in position to receive one corner of the bed-spring, mattress, or the like.
The invention contemplates certain novel features of construction and arrangements of the parts of myimproved bedstead-bracket whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered at once light and strong and made better adapted for use than other similar devices heretofore employed, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts'in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View. showing a portion of one of the posts of a bedstead having my improved bracket applied thereto for supporting the bedding at one corner. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bracket detached and enlarged, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the bracket as shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 1 represents the corner-post of the bedstead, of rectangular cross-section, and having pins 2,provided with upturned or L-shaped heads, set in its inner angle face, as clearly seen in Fig. 1, said pins 2 being arranged one above the other and being adapted to enter aligned slots 3 3, formed in the central angle of the right-angled body-piece of the bracket formed of two side portions 4 4, set at right angles to each other and adapted to fit tightly against the inner corner of the post 1, the bracket when once placed in position, with its slots 3 engaging said pins 2, being held again st removal therefrom by means of the heads of said pins, except the bracket be lifted up in a well-known way to permit said heads to pass through the slots 3.
The slots 3 are formed near opposite ends of the body-piece of the bracket, and between said slots and adjacent to the upper slot 3 is formed a shelf 5, extending out at right angles to the body-piece of the bracket and having a flat upper side adapted to receive and support one corner of a spring bed 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, said shelf being made in a somewhat quadrant form, as clearly seen in the plan view, Fig. 3.
In order to strengthen the bracket, I provide vertical triangular braces 7 7, which extend outward at right angles to each other from the body-piece t0 the shelf 5, as clearly seen in the drawings, each of said braces 7 forming practically a continuation of the side piece 4 at the opposite side of the body-piece of the bracket, whereby a maximum of strength is afforded the device.
In order to further brace the bracket and also to guide to some extent the articles of bedding held on the shelf and prevent them from slipping over the edges of said shelf, I provide other triangular braces 8 8, extending up vertically from the outer edges of the shelf to the outer edges of the respective side pieces 4 of the body-piece above said shelf 5, and these braces 8 act as stops to prevent too great movement of the bed 6 on the shelf, and also serve to strengthen the bracket at its weakest point-namely, at the upper slot 3.
The construction of the device,as above described, of cast metal alfords a very strong and convenient means for supporting the bedding in place in the bedstead and may be used in lieu of slats, thereby dispensing with the .racks commonly provided on the side pieces of bedsteads and affording a much more cleanly and desirable article of furniture.
It will also be seen that the device is readily adjustable vertically on the bed-post, it being only necessary to remove the bracket and after raising the hooks or pins 2 to again apply said bracket thereto. From the above description it will be evident that some change may be made in the construction of my improved braoket, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of .the device herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a bracket adapted to be secured to the corner of a bed post, consisting of a body piece having its sides at angles, to correspond to and fit the corner of the bed post, and provided with slots at its opposite ends to receive pins thereon, a flat topped shelf extending at right angles to the front face of said body piece and adapted to support one corner of the bedding, said shelf being adjacent to and below the upper slot in the body piece, and triangular braces uniting the opposite sides of the shelf to the opposite sides of the body piece, said braces being lo cated on opposite sides of the upper slot in the body and forming stops to limit the lateral movement of the bedding on said shelf sub stantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufactu re,a bracket adapted to be secured to a bed post, consisting of abody piece having its sides at angles, to correspond to and fit the corner of the bed post, and provided with slots at its opposite ends to receive pins thereon, a flat topped shelf extending at right angles to the front face of said body piece and adapted to support one corner of the bedding, said shelf be ing adjacent to and below the upper slot in the body piece, triangular braces uniting the opposite sides of the shelf to the opposite sides of the body piece, said braces being located on opposite sides of the upper slot in the body and forming stops to limit the lateral move ment of the bedding 011 said shelf, and triangular Vertical braces below the shelf and uniting the same to the body piece, said braces forming continuations of the inner edges of the side pieces of the body piece of the bracket, substantially as set forth.
