lUNrrn STATES ATENT Brien \VILLIAM REDDELL, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
BED' SOFA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314:,606, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed March 18, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM REDDELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver,
in the county of Arapahoe and State of 0010- rado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Sofas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in bed-sofas in which the back is made adjustable; and the objects of my invention are to provide a neat convenient sofa adapted to be used as a bed, and to provide therein a suitable receptacle for the bed-covering. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the sofa-frame; Fig. 2. a back view; Fig. 3, an end view; Fig. 4, a detail of the groove in which the back is hung.
Similarletters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
The posts A, B, O, and D, together with the rails a, b, c, and cl, constitute the frame-work of a bed-sofa independent of the back, which is adjustable, and is constructed as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, where it will be seen that the end pieces, E and E, together with the top and bottom rails, F and F, constitute the frame-work of the sofa'back.
To the posts D and O are hinged head and foot boards, which are provided with bolts Z, made to fit in corresponding holes in the pro- I jecting pins f, which are attached to the sofathe case is secured a leg, 2, and from one leg to the other one or more stays, cleats, or braces, J, extend.
The sofa-back is attached to the frame-work by means of the fastenings e, which are pro- (No model.)
vided with friction-rollers e, which operate in the curved slots or grooves g, made in the posts 0 and D for that purpose. The upper part of the sofa-back is provided with extension-pins f f, which fit into notches f in the parts 0 and D, for the purpose of retaining the sofa-back in an upright position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. \Vhen in this position, the friction-rollers rest in the front part of the curved slot 9, and the lower part of the back rests on the sofa-seat.
To place the sofa in the proper position to be used as a bed, the back is raised up and swung backward, raising the pins f out of the notches f, and raising the friction-rollers up over the turn in the curved slot, and then lowering the back until the friction-rollers rest in the lower end of the slots y, when the back is laid backward until it assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, when the legs i are lowered into place, which retains the back in the position shown. The case attached to the sofa-back, in which to store bedding, may be of sufficient size to have placed therein a pair of pillows and a sufficient quantity of covering to answer all the purposes required. The curved slots made in the parts D and C may be lined with metal, or may be made in metal and the metal set into the wood, as the requirements demand. By this manner of construction a bed-sofa may be made strong and durable and neat in appearance, inasmuch as not to disclose to the casual observer the fact of its being a combined sofa and bed. The slots or grooves which are formed in the posts are essentially inverted- U-shaped, with one leg of the U longer than the other, the pivots of the back frame rest; ing in the lower end of the longer leg when the back is depressed, and in the lower end of the shorter leg when the back is elevated.
Having thus fully described the construc tion and operation of my invention, what 11 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sofa-bed, the combinatiomwith a framework comprising posts having continuous unbroken inverted-J shaped slots or grooves extending from a point above to a point below the level of the seat portion of the sofa, and
ots projected into said slots or grooves, and at broken or inverted-L-shaped slots or grooves I In testimony whereof I affix my signature in at or near the upper ends of said posts, of a presence of two witnesses. back having at its lower opposite corners piv- XVILLIAM REDDELL. its upper opposite corners looking-pins which enter the inverted-L-shaped slots or grooves Witnesses:
when the back is elevated, substantially as E. MGORYsT E, specified. J. W. TRIPP.
