DOUBLE BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,829, dated October 6, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY S. SIMPSON, of Oonnersville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double Beds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, part broken away, of my improved bedstead. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 an enlarged view in section of the leg attachment.

The present invention relates to an improvement in bedsteads formed in such a manner as to have a part to be used as a trundle-bed arranged in sliding ways at the ends of the bed, so as to slide in and out when desired to be used, the outer part provided with a pair or set of legs, by means of which a second bed may be formed and conveniently folded up out of the way when not in use, all of which will now be fully set forth in detail.

In the accompanying drawings, A is the headboard, B the foot, and Othe side rails, of an ordinary bedstead. Each end of the side rails is provided with an ordinary metallic hook, I), which hooks into a transverse pin in the s.ot E of each of the posts. Instead, however, of the posts being provided with a single slot and atransverse pin therein, Iprovide two of these slots, the one above the other, each of which has an ordinary transverse pin, so that the side rails may be raised or lowered and placed in position at either of two different heights. I provide a transverse piece, F, secured at each end to the inner side of the posts. The upper sides of the pieces or ways F are provided with grooves G therein. I provide a transverse piece of this kind at each end of the bedstead, and designed to be about the height of the lower edge of the side rails when placed in position in the lower openings or slots of the posts. I next provide an ordinary trundlebed frame, F, of such a size as to be placed within the bedstead upon the ways F. Each corner of said frame is provided with a leg or pin designed to rest within the grooves G of the ways F. The side rails are first placed in position within the upper openings or slots of the posts, and this gives sufficient room for the trundle-bed frame to slide in upon the ways beneath the said side rails and be moved inwardly or outwardly, as found convenient. The outer part of the trundle-bed frame is provided with a swinging leg, J, which is designed to be in a vertical position when the trundlebed is drawn out, while the inner side of the trundle-bed rests upon the ways F. When the said trundle-bed is not in use and back in position upon the ways beneath the bed, the said leg folds up on the inner side of the under pieces of the trundlebed, and is thus hidden from view.

The lower openings of the posts are designed to receive the ends of the side rails only in cases where it is desired to make a low bed of the device and dispense altogether with the trundle-bed part.

When it is desired to operate the device, the trundle'bed is pulled out laterally from beneath the bed, with the inner side resting upon the ends of the ways, while the legs at the outer side drop down into a vertical position, and, resting upon the floor, hold the outer part of the trundle-bed at the same height as the inner.

WVhen it is desired to put the trundle-bed out of the when not in use, it is simply moved inwardly upon the ways, and as the legs swing up horizontally the entire trundlebed is hidden out of sight.

I design to make a reservation of the adj ustable leg device for a future patent.

What I claim is- The combination, with a bedstead, of transverse supporting-guides at the head and foot thereof below the side rails, G O, a laterallymovable trundlebed frame sustained by said guides, and pivoted folding legs recessed in the ends of said frame, substantially as de scribed.
