UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. WOOLDRIDGE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED TABLE AND BED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 236,289, dated January 4, 1881. Application filed April 28, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WOOL- DRIDGE, of the city of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Table and Bed, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved article of furniture which may be readily converted into a table orinto a bed or crib, being of simple and durable construction and convenient in operation and use; and the invention consists of a table the frame of which is made of two telescoping sections with bottom slats, and a top which is connected to one section by a sliding hinge, so as to be used as top for the table or as headboard for the bed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention and form a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of my combined table and bed, shown respectively in position as a table and bed. Fig. 3 is a top view when arranged as a bed; and Fig. 4 is an end view of the same, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B in the drawings represent the two sections of the supporting-frame of my combined table and bed or crib. The table is made of any convenient size, according as it is intended for use as a bed or crib. The sections A and B are so connected that one telescopes within the other, each being provided at the outer ends with legs 0 and D, respectively. The side boards or panels of each section are provided with one ortwo slots, grooves, or slides, E, into each of which projects a separate pin, E, of the outer section, by which a reliable connection of the sections is formed when they are pushed together or drawn out, the double connection acting in the nature of a stiffening-brace. The bottom ot'each section is provided with a row of slats, I 1 and J J, those of the inner section, B, being arranged slightly above those of the outer section, A, so that one row of slats may readily slide over the other row of the slats when one section is pushed into the other. The inner section, B, forms the repository for the bedding when con- The top G of the table is so arranged that it can be removed entirely or thrown in vertical position at the end of one section, so as to form the head-board when the tableis converted into a bed or crib. This is accomplished by means of a sliding hinge, which is formed of a slot, L, lined with brass or other suitable metal, and of a headed pin, M, which is securely attached to the upper corner of section A. On this pin M the top G slides when it is raised and placed in a horizontal positionor when it is swung down into vertical position. The head of the pin M is flattened, so as to be readily inserted into the slot when the top is turned crosswise thereto, so that the slot is in line with the head. When the head of the pin is in the slot the top is turned back again into its proper position. For removing the top this operation is reversed. The top G is furthermore arranged at the under side with two 1ongitudinal and transverse side strips or moldings, N, which fit either to the outside or inside of the sections, and form a kind of brace for the same when used as a table, and an ornamental feature of the top when used as a head-board.
This combined article of furniture is readily converted into a bed by lifting the top and sliding it along the pin M into vertical position, then drawing the sections apart as far as the connecting slots and pins will admit, and finally arranging the bedding therein. It is converted into a table by reversing these operations, the whole forming a very simple, economical, and convenient article for domestic purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a combined table and bed, the combination of the telescoping supporting-sections A B, being connected by guiding and steadying devices at their sides, with a top plate, G, which is connected by a sliding hinge-joint to one section, and provided with binding-cleats at the under side, to be thrown into vertical position as a head-board or into horizontal position as a table, substantially as and for the 10 purpose set forth.
2. In a combined table and bed, the combination of two telescoping and supporting bedsections,AB,the outer one of which has a fixed headed guide-pin, M, at the upper edge, with a hinged and sliding top, G, having a groove, l1, extending longitudinally through a portion of the top. substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of April, 20
WILLIAM H; VVOOLDRIDGE.
