Description

D. WALKER. Folding-Crib.
` No. 217.716. Patented July/22, |879.
rmflllllllllll N.PETERS. FHOTO-LJTHOGRAFHE. WASHINGTON. D C.
vUlvrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WALKER, OF NEVARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CRIBS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,716, dated July 22, 1879 application filed April 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WALKER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cribs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a top view of my improved folding crib. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, showing the crib folded with the mattresses inclosed. Fig 3 is a similar section of the crib, showing it closely folded for shipment without the mattresses.
The same letter marks the same part in all the figures.
The advantages of the folding crib are facility of packing in a small space for shipment, and that when not in use in the household it takes but little room in the apartment in which it is placed. An objection has heretofore existed to them that when folded the mattress had to be removed, so that the saving of room was somewhat counterbalanced by the need of a separate provision for the stowage ofthe mattress. My improvements obviate this objection.
My invention consists in providing the crib with folding ends and bottom, so divided and hinged that they can be folded to form two compartments at the sides for the reception of the mattress, which is formed in two parts, one to lit each compartment, the ends and bottom of the crib being further capable of being folded into a still smaller space when the mattress is not inclosed, all as hereinafter more fully described.
I make the bottom of the crib of four leaves, E F G H, of which leaf E is hinged at ff to the side rail, S. Its width is equal to the thickness of the mattress-about five or six inches. To its inner edge is hinged at g g leaf F. y
Leaf H is of the same width as leafE, and
hinged at 7c lc to the side rail S. To its inner edge is hinged at i fi the leaf G. Vhen in the horizontal position the leaves F and G meet at the middle line of the crib, and are supported by the brackets l m, attached to the upright leaves B C B C.
When leaves F and G are in the vertical position, as in Fig. 2, they form the inner sides of the lateral compartments for the reception of the sections of the mattress.
The ends of the crib are formed, respectively, by the leaves A B C D and Al B C D. Leaf A is hinged at a to post P. To its inner edge is hinged at b leaf B, which corresponds in width with bottom leaf, F. To leaf B at e is hinged leaf C, and to leaf Gis hinged leaf D at c. Leaf D is hinged at d to the post P. y
The opposite end of the crib is constructed in the same way, the leaves A B C' Dl corresponding in size, position, and mode of junction to those marked A B G D.
.The mattress I make in two parts, M M, by a longitudinal division, so that when laid side by side they will cover the bottom of the crib.
A hook, h, is used for holding the crib together when folded with the mattresses included.
When it is desired to fold the crib the leaves F G are turned up to a vertical position, the. leaves E H remaining horizontal. Each section of the mattress is then held in a compartment formed by the side of the crib, the bottom leaf, and the narrow end leaves, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The leaves B C and Bl C' fold inward between the leaves F G, and the hook h holds the parts in the position described.
For transportation or shipment without the mattresses the crib is capable of being still more compactly folded, the leaves E El, as well as F G, being turned up, and the leaves A D Al D' being folded in between E G, together with leaves B B C C. The crib thus folded to its most compact form is shown in Fig. 3.
I claim as my improvements in the folding cribl. The bottom composed of the leaves E F G H, hinged as described, in combination with the ends composed of the leavesAB C D and Al B C' D', hinged together and to the frame, as speoit ed, all as and for the purposes stated.
2. A folding crib provided at its ends and bottom with double sets of leaves and hinges, as described, so that it may be folded at Will into compartments to receive. a divided mattress, as shown in Fig. 2, or into the compact form shown in Fig. 3, all in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I afx hereto my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
DAVID WALKER.
