UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
LEIVIS J. KING, OF MONMOUTH, KANSAS.
QOMBINED HAT-RACK AND CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,741, dated August 10, 1897.
Application fil d December 17, 1896. Serial No. 616,085. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS J. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hat- Rack and Case, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in show-cases.
My invention is adapted more particularly for use as a combined hat-rack and case; and it consists in certain novel and useful features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of the rack and case. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same, showing the case opened and the rack withdrawn for the purpose of inspecting the articles carried by the rack. In this view the case has a portion of the 'front broken away, so as to fully disclose the construction of the rack. Fig. 3 represents an end view of the rack. Fig. 4: represents a plan view of the rack.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
A indicates a rectangular case having glass sides and ends and adapted to rest upon a rectangular counter B of suitable size, to which it is removably secured in any suitable manner. One end of the case A is provided with a door 0, through which the hat-rack D may be wholly or partly withdrawn from the case. The rack D consists of a base-board E, to the upper side of which near the ends are detachably secured the lower ends of two vertical posts F. Removably secured at their ends to the posts F, respectively, are several horizontal strips G, located one above the other. Secured in any suitable manner to the upper or lower side of each of the strips G are a series of transverse horizontal parallel strips H of any desirable number and which are adapted to support the hats or other articles which are to be displayed in the case A. Pegs I, extending from the outer side of each of the posts F upwardly and outwardly, are also provided for this purpose. Near each corner of the board E, upon its under side, are secured bearing-blocks J. At each end of the board E is a transverse roller K, the ends of which are rotatably mounted in the bearing-blocks J. Hinged at one end to the under side of the board E is a supporting-post L, the function of which is to provide a support for the outer end of the rack when the rack is withdrawn from the case A to the position shown in Fig. 2. When not in use or when the rack is wholly within the case A, the post L is placed in the horizontal position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the rack is drawn out, the post is permitted to assume the vertical position shown in Fig. 2, the lower end of the post resting upon the floor.
It is evident that the rack and case may be modified in many ways from the one illustrated without departing from the spirit of my invention. Any desired number of strips G, having secured thereon any desired number of strips H, may be employed to suit the purpose required.
The rack is preferably made, as already described, in detachable parts for convenience in shipping from one place to another. case A may also be composed of detachable parts, so that the rack and case may both be packed'for shipment within the hollow interior of the counter B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined hat-rack and case, the combination with the case A, of the supportingcounter B, and the rack D consisting of the base-board E provided with friction-roller K adapted to roll upon the counter B, the posts F detachably secured to the upper side of the board E, connecting-strips G provided with transverse strips H secured thereon, and the post L hinged to the under side of the base-board E, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS J. KING.
Witnesses:
J. A. ZOOK, JOHN W. H. CouEsEY.
