Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed July 11,1906. Serial No. 325,660.
To (LII/1 10/1/0111, it IIHII I/(full/(017b,
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Harmon), a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of \Vheeling, county of Ohio, and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cribs, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds for children, and more particularly to a collapsible crib; and it consists in. the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.
The object of my invention is to provide a collapsible crib, or childs bed, which is adapted for attachment to the side rail of an ordinary bed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speci'lication, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing it attached to an ordinary bed Fig. 2 is an inner side elevation of the invention; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same, showing it collapsed, or folded; Fig.
4 is a cross section of the invention; and Fig.
5 is a perspective View of a broken section of the removable side.
Referring to said drawings, in which like referencenumerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates end rails to which are pivotally attached at each end the ends of longitudinal slats 2. Also pivotally attached or secured u )on the outer ends of said end rails 1 are longitudinal siderails 3 and 4E. Hinged upon the side-rail 3 so as to stand upright thereon and to be foldable inward is a longitudinal side-railing 5, the hinges 6 being of the ordinary leaf con struetion with the leaves secured respectively to the lower edge of the inner face of said side-railing and to the inner face of the side rail 3.
Hinged upon the outer ends of the siderailing'5 are inwardly-folding end-railings '7 which are adapted to fold close against the inner face of said side-railing. The free ends of said end-railings 7 are each provided with an eye 8 adapted to be engaged by a hook 9 which is pivoted upon the end of the side-rail 4, as shown in Fig. 2. Shoulders 9 are provided on the ends of said side-rail 4 against which the ends of said end-railings are adaptcd to abut when folded outwardly in open position. Secured upon the under side of the side-rail 4 are two or more horizontal lugs 10 with downturned ends 1]. adapted to engage the side rail 12 of a bed 13, said lugs being adapted to serve as supports for that side of the crib. Pivotally attached to the side-rail 3 on the outer face thereof are legs 1-1 for supporting the side of the crib oppol site that which is attached to the bed 13.
As a means for holding said legs 14 in rigid standing position, lugs 15 are provided on the lower edge of the side-railing 5 which are adapted to engage the upper end of each leg at each side thereof, as shown in Fig. 1.
To fold or collapse the invention, the hooks 9 are disengaged from the eyes S, and the end-railings 7 are folded inward against the inner side of the side-railing 5. Said side-railing, together with said end-railings, are then folded inward upon the slats 2. \Vhen said side-railing is folded inward, the lugs 15 are withdrawn from engagement with the legs 14:; the said legs are then folded up against the side of said side-rail 3. Then, the slats and side-rails being pivotally attached to the end-rails, the whole is collapsed, by forcing the said side-rails longitudinally in opposite directions, so that the parts occupy substantially the positions illustrated in Fig. 3. In said ligure, however, for the sake of clearness, the invention is not shown wholly collapsed, as when so collapsed the slats lit up close together.
In order to render the invention suitable for use independent of another bed, I provide legs 16 upon the side-rail l, the same being similar to the legs 14 and pivoted in the same manner. I. also provide a removable or detachable side-railing 17, as shown in Fig. 5, for closing the side of the crib opposite the side-railing 5. Said side-railing 17 has its ends provided with tongues 18 adapted to engage grooves 19 provided for the purpose in the inner faces of the free ends of the endrailings 7. Lugs 15 are provided upon the outer face of the lower edge of said railing 17,
the same being similar to and adapted for the same purpose as the lugs 15.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I pro vide an extremely simple and inexpensive device of the characterdescribed, and that the same is of such construction as to render it extremely convenient for use. Furthermore, when not in use, it may be conveniently folded, or collapsed, into small space, when it may be placed out of the way.
I have described my invention more or less in detail, and in what I consider to be its simplest form, but it is obvious that various slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of said invention without departing from the general spirit or scope thereof. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a collapsible crib, end-rails, longitudinal slats and side-rails pivoted at their ends to said end-rails, a side-railing hinged l upon one of said side-rails so as to be foldable inward, end-railings hinged to the opposite ends of said side-railing so as to be foldi able inward thereagainst, hooks for securing the free ends of said end-railings in extended positions, shoulders on the ends of the inner pivoted side-rail, against which the free ends of said end-railings abut, legs pivoted upon the outer face of the outer side-rail, and op- 1 positely-disposed lugs carried by the side i railing, said lugs being adapted to embrace l said legs to hold them in rigid vertical positions only when said side-railing is upright.
2. In a collapsible crib, end-rails, longitudinal slats and side-rails pivoted at their ends to said end-rails, a side-railing hinged upon the outer of said side-rails so as to be foldable inward, end-railings hinged to the opposite ends of said side-railing so as to be foldable inward thereagainst, hooks for securing the free ends of said end-railings in extended positions, shoulders on the ends of the inner side-rail against which the free ends of said end-railings abut, legs pivoted upon the outer face of the outer side-rail, oppositely-- disposed lugs carried by the side-railing near each end thereof, said lugs being adapted to embrace said legs to hold them in rigid vertical positions only when said side-railing is upright, and a detachable side-railing having tongues upon its opposite ends for engaging grooves provided in the inner faces of the free ends of said end-railings, substantially as described.
Signed by me in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
