ROBERT E. BAKER, 01E' HQPEWELL, VIRGINIA.
COLLAPSIBLE BED. Y
Specification o Letters atent.
Patented Nev. o, 1920.
Application led October 28, 1916. Serial No. 128,318.
T all 'who-m it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, Roemer E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Hopewell, in the county of Prince George and State of TVirginia, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Collapsible I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a detail plan view of the bed, unfolded for use showing the parts as partially folded, in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the bed folded, parts being broken away.
Fig. t is a detail side view of the bed, made into seat form.
Fig. 5 is a detail cross-sectional view of one of the mattress sections.
The invention has relation to an improved collapsible bed, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
ln the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 12 designates the bed, composed of a transverse head piece 13 including a horizontally extending rigid frame, preferably of box form, adapted to contain the bedding, 14, said frame consisting of three extensible bars 15, each composed of two sections 15, hinged together vertically at their inner ends at 16, the head sections 15 being vertically hinged to the head box 13 at 17, and the foot sections being hinged at 18 to the transverse foot piece 19.
llhe sections of each frame bar are each about one-half the length of the head box, the head sections folding inwardly toward this box and the foot sections folding inwardly toward the head sections, and in order that there shall be provision for folding the middle frame bar without interference with the side frame bars, this middle frame bar is arranged and the sections thereof fold together below the side frame bars. The side frame bars are usually of fiat or strap metal, provided with lower inturned flanges 25, to support the mattress sections hereinafter referred to, said flanges being located upon a level with the top surface of and a foldable frame the head box 13, whereby theitop surface of said box is enabled to be used as a part of the bed bottom or support for'the mat-4 tress sections. To provide for this, the sections of the side frame bars fold together above the head box. T he side frame bars fold toward the head box and toward each other,
and the middle frame bar is foldable either to one side or the other without interference with the lateral frame bars.
rind inasmuch as each frame bar is made up of two sections, foldable together toward the head box, very little room is talren up by said frame bars, and yet these bars are of strong character, the strain of the weight of the bed being well. borne by the vertical hinges of these frame bar sections. ln order to brace the sections at the meeting ends thereof, a middle leg 20 is provided for each frame bar, said leg'forming the pivot of the hinge and taking up very little room. Each of the four main legs 21 of the bed is preferably extended upwardly to form head and foot posts 22, over which a mosquito canopy may be spread and supported, said posts being hinged to the head and foot legs at 23, the hinges being at different levels, so that these posts may be compactly folded down into horizontal position, one over the other.
The four mattress sections 2li are arranged one above the other in the space between the head box of the bed and the overlying shelf 10 of the base section 6, and when the bed is unfolded rest upon lower flanges of the side frame bars.
l claim:
1. A collapsible bed, having upright head and foot members one of which includes a rigid horizontal frame, lateral connecting bars and an intermediate connecting bar for said members composed each of two sections hinged together and to the members and foldable horizontally of said horizontal frame, the sections of the connecting bars being in equal to one half the length of the respec tive members, said lateral bars being foldable inwardly toward each other and said `intermediate bar being located below and foldable in the same direction and under one of the lateral bars, said horizontal frame and said connecting bars constituting a bed bottom, .and said head and foot members having respectively upright extensions pivoted thereto and foldable to horizontal posiagainst the inner edge Y length each about bed bottom7 said head and 1foot members having respectively upright extensions pivoted thereto and folda'ble to horizontal posi- -I tion overlying and supported upon said horizontal frame.
In testimony whereof I aifiX my signature, in Vpresence of two Witnesses. l
