To all whomv it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H, GUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Combination Beds and Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates toimprovements in house furniture, the principal object being to provide a piece of furniture which in asingle unit will combine the features of a table for dining or other purposes, with a bed.

This is done by constructing the device in two equal portionshinged together, and so arranged that when folded together a table of fairsize is had of the usual normal height, and when opened or spread apart, a bed is formed which may be equipped with any standard type of spring mattress so that it will be as adequate and comfortable as any ordinary permanent bed. In utilizmg the devlce for either purpose there is nothing which has to be added or removed in'either case, since all the necessary features for both bed and table are incorporated as permanent parts of the structure.

Such an article of furniture should fill a' and without the appearance of a makeshift when in use for either of its purposes.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes which it is designed. These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of.

The sides 2 are abutted together at their free ends and hinged together as at 4 in such a mannr that when opened out, the box-like structures formed will be in continuous alinement, with the members 1 underneath; while when folded up, and positioned vertically, a completely inclosed box or frame is formed, the open ends of which then lie adjacent the-ground, while the ends 3 serve as portions of a table top, abutting together and overhanging the sides 2 a certain ex tent in order to increase the width of the table, as shown in Fig. 1. When positioned as at first described, a rectangular open topped inclosure is formed of ample width and length to'scrve as a bed, in which inclosure a spring mattress 5, made in one or two sections as may be found desirable, may be permanently placed, as indicated in Fig. 2. Legs or supports 6 and 7 project from both ends of the members 1, the members 6 being at the ends having the table tops 3 thereon and serving when the device is used as a table as supports for additional table leaves 8 hinged to the tops 3, so that a continuous top of considerable area is formed.

The members 7 when the device is used as a table, rest adjacent the floor, the actual weight being carried by rollers or casters 9 which then bear on the floor and are arranged in off set alinement to each other so as to seat in recesses 10 cut in the adjacent members 7, for a purpose as will appear.

When. it is desired toutilize the device as a bed, the outer table leaves 8 are raised so as to disclose handles 11 by means of which the two hinged structures may be pulled apart and opened out to the position shown in Fig. 2.

When in this osition, the leaves 8 are folded to lie ad acent the leaves 3 and serve as head and foot rests of the bed, while, as will. be seen, both the members 6 hinged portion is raised about the hingesand 7 serve as supports for the bed, raising the same off the floor a desired distance and insuring a substantial structure. To hold the leaves 8 in such folded position, any suitable means may be employed, as for instance by placing pins 18 in the adjacent set from each other so that they may socket in the adjacent edges when the structure is used as a table. Rings 1-4 hinged on the faces of the members 8, and countersunk to normally lie flush therewith, are arranged to move downwardly over the pins, as shown in Fig. 2, when the leaves 8 are folded to lie against the ends 3, thus maintaining them in this position.

It will be noted'that the members 2 then he inalinement with each other and form unbroken side-boards for the bed, while the adjacent legs or bracket 7 also lie directly against each. other. :For this reason it is necessary for the casters 9, which are then raised from the floor and lie in a plane parallel thereto, to be socketed into the adjacent members 7. In order to aid in raising and lowering thehinged portions, so that this may be done single handed if necessary, coil springs 12 are pivotally mounted at their ends to the inner sides of the adjacent members These springs are arranged so that when the device is outstretched to serveas a bed, they are in tension, and as soon as one somewhat, they exert a pull which aids in folding the members together, but when nearly closed, they become in compression, and serve to resist any sudden snapping to-. gether of the parts. 1 WVhen raising or closing the device, one set of the legs 6 and 7 leaves the floor immediately, while the legs 7 on the other serve as the axis about which the other may be tilted, so that both portions will not only be closed but raised to a vertical position at the same time. 7

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the inventioiras set forth herein. Vhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to and do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended V V claims. edges of the members 3, these pins being off- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A combination bed and table comprising a pair of box like structures open on one face and hinged together at the edges adjacent the open face whereby they may be opened out to serve as a'bed area or folded together to serve'as a table-support, the ends of the box like structure, opposite the hinged ends serving as the table top, auxiliary table leaves hinged to the rigid tops transversely thereof and at opposite ends, legs projecting outwardly from the structures at their hinged ends and arranged to supportthe same both when used as a table and a bed, and additional legs similarly disposed at the opposite ends of the structures from the first named legs and arranged to support the auxiliary leaves in horizontal alinement when the structure is used as a tableand to sustain the weight of the opposite ends thereof when serving as a bed. y Y V 2.
