G. B. PASSMORE. V
EMBALMING TABLE.
j T Patented $ept. 3, 1895.
' UNITED STATE P TENT OFFICE.
YGEORGE-BIVRDSALL PASSMORE, OF MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA.
EMBALlVllNG-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,608, datedSeptember 3,1895. Application filed April 16, 1894; ScrialIID. 507,753. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-f I Be it known that LGEoRGE BIRDsALL Pass- MoRE,a citizen of the United-States,residing at Malvern, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embalming- Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same', reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in embalming-tables; and the object of my invention is the provision of a table which will properly support the body when being embalmed and which can be used to carry the body after the manner of a bier, and thus perform the two functions in a perfect manner, and which table can be folded to occupy a small amount of space, and will be of durable, simple, and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists of an embalmingtable embodying novel features of construction andcombiuation of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the construction and the advantages arising therefrom may be understood and appreciated, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawingsnan embalming-table constructed in accordancewith my invention.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my table with the folding or sectional bodysupport removed. Fig. 2 represents a similar view showing the sectional supporting-frame in position. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the sectional supporting-frame, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line was of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the hinges used for hinging the sectional main frame.
Referring by letter to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the frame of my embalming-table composed of two similar sections hinged together at the center, as at B, and having at the corners the brackets O for making a rigid and durable frame. The hinges B are provided each with a hook or stud B, as shown in Fig. 1. To the inner side of the side rails of the frame is pivoted the supporting-legs D, having the connecting and bracing rails or strips E, and to sustain the legs in a vertical position I provide the brace-rods F, which have their outer ends con-' nected to the frame and their inner ends engaging the rails E;and thus they support the legs in a vertical position. The corners of the frame are provided each with a socket G to receive the standards H, having the cords J connected thereto, and this forms a guard and also a support for a cover for covering the body.
0n the cross-strips E is supported the bodysupporting frame. This frame consists of two tapered open-work or screened sections K, hinged at the center by hinges L, and one section carries the head-rest M, which comprises the curved plate secured to the yielding or spring plate M, which is attached to the base M secured to the hinged section, and thebase and frame K are provided with openings to receive and guide the pin M on the head-rest and prevent lateral play of the rest. One of the sections is provided with lugs or ears K, having openings K which fit on the studs B and hold the sections in place. The sections are provided on their inner edges with pins R, which, when the sections are fiat or are in a horizontal position, receive the ends of the plates N, and these plates N also serve to support one of the sections in an in- I clined position. The said plates N have a series of notches 0, adapted to engage the loop P, to adjust the section to any angle desired when embalming.
The plates are also formed with the hooks or notches Q on the opposite side, which are used to engage the pins B when the sections are in a horizontal or flat position, as is evident.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I provide an embalming-table which can be used either as an embalming-table or as a bier, and which will perform both functions in a perfect manner, which can be folded to occupy a very small amount of space, and which is of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, thus possessing all the requisites to render the invention'practical and useful.
I claim' 1. The combination of a main supporting frame consisting of two sections connected by hinges each of which is provided with an up wardly extending stud, the legs hinged to the frame, the staples carried by one set of the legs, a body supporting frame consisting of two sections hinged together and one provided with laterally projecting plates having openings formed therein to receive the studs on the hinges connecting the sections of the main frame, and adjusting bars connected to the other section of the body supporting frame and adapted to engage the staples on the legs to hold the frame in any desired inclined position.
2. The combination of a main supporting frame consisting of two sections connected by hinges each of which is provided with an upwardly extending stud, the legs hinged to the frame, the staples carried by one set of the legs, a body supporting frame consisting of GEORGE BIRDSALL PASSMORE.
