Patented Peb. '6, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
CORNELIUS B. ADRlANCE, OF BUFFALO, NEW' YORK.
EXTENSIBLE CRADLE OR CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,401, dated February 6, 1894.
Application lctl .Tune 9, 1892. Serial No.436.109. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known thatl, CORNELIUS B. ADRIANCE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Cradles or Cribs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in extensible cradles or cribs, the object thereof being to provide a crib with side and end frames and a mattress support which are extensible, the head and foot sections being adapted to receive rockers when desired; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure l is a plan View of a crib constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a` longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the line y-'y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view.
This invention consists of a crib made up of longitudinally extensible side frames or sections and laterally extensible head and foot sections, which are adapted to be used in connection with a longitudinally and laterally extensible mattress support which can be connected to the corner posts to be moved in unison. with the side and head and foot sections.
In the drawings A A designate the corner posts which are provided near their upper ends and centrally with inwardly projecting bars o a, said bars being rigidly attached to the posts. The inner sides of these bars are provided longitudinally with d iverging grooves or recesses a of, within which tit two members of a cruci-form casting a2, the other two members ttingwithin similar grooves formed in an intermediate bar B. The bars a a and B B of the head and foot sections are connected to each other by rungs which form an open frame around the mattress support.
Near the upper ends of the corner posts and to one side of the bars a. a are attached slotted plates l) rear of which the posts are recessed to receive hooks b secured to the ends of the longitudinal rails C C. The lower longitudinal rails also carry hooks at their ends which engage with notched plates secured to the posts adjacent to the lower bars a a. These rails are provided longitudinally with diverging recesses in which are located cruciforxn castings c, said cruciform castings being attached to a connecting bar C the construction being similar to that applied to the head and foot sections.
To the corner posts between the rails C and o. are attached bent plates b2, with which the bent ends of spring plates or bars D engage, the opposite ends of said bars being secured tom the transverse bars of the mattress supporting frame E. This mattress supporting frame is made up of longitudinal and transverse adjustable rails connected to each other by suitable loops, so that the frame can be expanded both longitudinally and laterally, the spring plates or bars D are pivotally attached adjacent to the outer ends of the transverse expansible bars of the mattress frame, and by pivotally securing them thereto they can be moved so as to enter the opening between the cut away edge of the corner post and the strip e2, and when the frame is folded or drawn closer together they can be swung upon their pivots so as to not project beyond the mattress trame.
lf desired rockers can be attached to the lower ends of the legs or corner posts A A, when it is desired to employ the same as a cradle. l.
'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf l. A longitudinally and laterally expansible crib made up of head, toot and side sections, each comprising central sections which are movably connected to end sections, which end sections are attached to or engage with corner posts, and similar sections connected IOC to those immediately beneath to form a guard, corner posts A having plates b2 and a longitudinally and laterally extensible bed bottom having spring plates D with bent ends which engage with the plates b2 substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a supporting frame comprising corner posts having expansible head and foot boards carried thereby, of the longitudinally expansible side rails, and an expansible mattress support consisting of longitudinal slats each Slat being made up of two pieces connected to each other by loops, and
oi'ossbars to which the slats are connected, each cross-bar being made up of two pieces adapted to slide upon each other, the outer ends of the cross-bars carrying spring plates which are adapted to engage with xtures carried by the corner-posts, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CORNELIUS B. ADRIANCE. Witnesses:
FRED. SANDROCK, W. J. SANDRooK.
