No. 514,402. PaflentedTeh. 6, 1894;
' Unrrnn STATES PATENT CORNELIUS B. ADRIANCE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,402, dated February 6, 1894. Application filed June 9, 1892. Serial No. 486,110- (N model.
To all" whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that LOoRNELIUs B.ADR.IANCE, acitizen of the United States of America.residing at Buifalo, in the countyof Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding cots.
The object of the invention is to provide a bed or cot which when not in use may be folded to occupy but a small amount of space, said cot being also provided with an extensible mattress supporting frame; and it consists in the constructionand combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a plan view of a cot or bed constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4: is a side elevation, showing the cot folded. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the side rails. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of one of the side rails.
A and A designate the head and footsections of the bed or cot, the same being made up of posts a a, connected to each other by pieces a, a and the usual head and foot boards. The posts are made flat where the side rails abut against the same, and are provided with mortises I) over which are secured metal plates b having vertical slots to receive hooks attached to the side rails. otally attached to the inner sides of the reel;- angular portions of the posts and are also pivoted to the side rails or blocks B attached to and overlapping the side rails. Each side rail is made up of three pieces: 0 designating the connecting strip with which the end pieces 0 C are in sliding engagement. The end pieces of one side rail are connected to the opposite end pieces of. the other rail by transverse bars D D, which serve as supports Flat bars B are piv-' for the bed bottom E, as will be hereinafter described. The meeting faces of the pieces which make up the side rails are provided longitudinally with diverging grooves or recesses c c which receive the members of a cruciform casting or block d; said blocks being rigidly attached to the ends of the connecting strip and to the outer ends of the end pieces 0 G and slide in the grooves or recesses in the adjacent strip.
The mattress supporting frame is made up of longitudinal bars 6 e, which lie one above the other, said bars being connected to each other by loops so that the mattress supporting frame may be extended longitudinally, and the bars 6 are connected at their outer ends by transverse bars g. To these transverse bars are attached springs h, which consist of metallic plates curved as shown to engage with the transverse bar 9 of the mattress support and with the cross-bars D of the bed.
A bed constructed as herein shown and described may be extended longitudinally, and
when it is desired to pack or store the same the head and foot sections can be swung upwardly so as to disengage the hook therefrom, and when swung can be folded as shown in Fig. a. When the parts are folded they may be retained by a suitable hook carried by the inner sides of the rails.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- 7 1. A folding and extensible cot or bed, comprising mon-extensible head and foot sections the legs thereof having mortises and slotted plates, extensible side rails each made up of a central and end sections which are grooved on their abutting faces, cruciform blocks which engage with said grooves and connect the sections, bars pivotally connected to the head and foot sections and to the end sections of the side rails, cross bars which connect the opposite end sections to each other and provide a support for the bed-bottom, said bed-bottom being made up of longitudinal slats which are connected near their ends to cross pieces, and provided adjacent to the abutting ends with loops, the cross pieces carrying springs having bent ends for engagement with the cross bars attached to the side rails, substantially as shown.
' 2. The combination in a longitudinally extensible and folding cot or bed, of the end sections A and A, extensible side rails and mattress section carried by the side rails, links B B pivoted at one end to the corner posts and at the other to the extensible side rails, and hooks rigidly secured to the ends of the side rails which are adapted to engage with slotted plates attached to the corner posts, whereby the parts are adapted to be swung in engagement with each other, and when the side rails and mattress section are contracted the head and foot sections can be swung 'to lie one above the other, the parts being held together when folded by hooks which engage with the side rails and upper section,snbstan- 15 tially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
