' UNITED STATES ERICK P. BERGMAN AND ARTHUR RENARD, OF CONCORDIA, KANSAS.
EXTENSlBLE 'BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,725, dated May 21, 1901.
Application led February 27, 1901. Serial No. 491043- (NO model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERIcK P. BERGMAN and ARTHUR E. RENARD,citizens of theUnited States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extensible Bedsteads, of which the following is a specilfication.
Thisfinvention relates to certain new. and useful improvements in bedsteads; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of the parts which provide means whereby the bedstead can be extended laterally to provide for either a single or double bed, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bedstead constructed in accordance with our invention, in which view the side bars are shown extended. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one end of the bed, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the slats.
Abed made up in accord with our invention is preferably constructed entirely of metal, the posts A being tubular and. provided at a suitable distance above their lower ends with apertures which are adapted to receive hooks b, which project from the end pieces of the sides B. The lower bars of the sides B are preferably made angular, said angle-bars B having through the horizontal flange openings b', which are adapted to receive pins c, which depend from the ends of each section of the slats. The slats are each made up of two' parts C C, the part C being bifurcated to provide parallel side members, between which the reduced portion of the part C is secured by means of plates d d', which are rigidly attached to the ends of the members ofthe slats. By the construction shown we provide slats which are longitudinally extensible and can be moved with the side pieces of the bed.
The posts A, at right angles to the side pieces B B, have rigidly attached thereto inwardly-projecting tubes D D', each having therethrough longitudinal slots e and below the slots a plurality of perforations e. The posts above the lower tubes D carry inwardlyprojecting sectionsH H, which are ornamented to correspond with the ornamentation of the side pieces, above the angle-bar thereof.
' F refers to the central sections of the head and foot board, and on a line with the tubes D D' are larger tubes E E', into which the tubes D D may slide. The tubes E have in their lower portion longitudinal slots, and in said slots are placed latches G, the same being secured to the tubes by transverse pins g. The latches are constructed to provide Vvnear the pins depending portions, above which are springs g', which tend to force the inwardly-projecting ends g of the latches in engagement with the apertures e'. noted that the outwardly-projecting ends of the latches carried by each bar are near each other, so that they may be readily manipu- It will be i lated by one hand while the other hand actuates the latches on the corresponding bar closed and the latches are hidden, as they lie mostly within the tubes and the slots therein. When the latches are operated to remove their catch ends from the holes c', the side sections and the posts, together with the extensible slats, can be adjusted to make the bed wider or narrower, as desired.
The inwardly projecting sections H H, which are carried by the posts, may lie snugly against a correspondingly-ornainented end piece attached to the center tubes E.
We are aware that prior to our invention bedsteads have been made with hollow head and foot boards to receive pieces which project from the posts 'and' enter thev recess to provide means for extending the width of the bed, and we do not claim such construction,
broadly; but
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a metal bed having side pieces, the combination of corner-posts having inwardlyprojecting tubes D D said tubes having longitudinal slots and perforations below said slots, inwardly-projecting sections carried by the corner-posts on a line with the side pieces of the bed, central sections having upper and lower slotted tubes, spring-actuated latches attached to the slotted central sections to engage with the apertures in the tubes attached to the corner-posts, and pins attached to the tubes to engage the longitudinal slots in the tubes attached to the post, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the posts and side IOO of the central sections and engaging said apertures, the parts being organized substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence o f two subscribing witnesses.
ERICK P. BERGMAN. Y ARTHUR E. RENARD.
