EXTENSION BEDSTEAD.
(Application filed m 20. 1902.
(N6 Model.)
Witnesses UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROGER LEE B ETTS, OF DOUBLE SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI.
EX'l'ENSlON-BEDSTEAD SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,551, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed May 20, 1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROGER LEE BETTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Double Springs, in the countyof Oktibbeha, State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lilxtension-Bedsteads; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to extension-bed steads; and it has for its object to provide a bedstead which may be converted from a double to a single bedstead, or vice versa, at will.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction wherein the parts will be held securely in their different positions and which construction will be strong, cheap, and durable.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bedstead in its single form. Fig. 2 is .a
horizontal section through the headboard and showing the latter extended. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the bedstead in its single form and showing one of the slats in elevation. Fig. 4E isa detail sectional view similar to Fig. 2 and including the slotted plates. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of portions of the headboard, showing the hooks for engagement with the posts.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a bedstead, including a headboard, a footboard, side rails, and slats. The headboard comprises the posts 5 and 6, to each of which is secured a headboard- section 7 and 8, respectively, these headboard-sections being arranged in different vertical planes, so that one may slide behind the other. Transversely of the section 7 are upper and lower slots 9 and 10, while transversely of the section 8 are the slots 11 and 12, the slots 9 and 11 being arranged to register, as also the slots 10 and 12. On the end of the section 7 farthest from the post 5 are pivoted hooks 13, while on the corresponding end of the section 8 are pivoted hooks 14 for a purpose to be into disengaged positions.
Serial no. 108,216. (No model.)
bring the posts 5 and 6 into close relation, and
to hold the posts in such close relation sockets 17 and 18 are formed in the posts and are provided with keepers 19 and 20 for engagement by the hooksabove referred to.
There are hooks at both the upper and lower portions of the innerendsof the sections 7 and 8, so that displacement of the posts is positively prevented, while when the headboard is to be broadened the posts may be drawn apart after the hooks have been swung The footboard 21 of the bedstead has the same construction as the headboard, so that a specific description of this is not required, and connecting the corresponding posts of the head and foot board are the side rails 21' and 22, which move with the connected sections of the head and foot boardstoward and away from each other.
Slats are provided for the bedstead, and each comprises two sections 23 and 24, connected by means of a hinge 25. When the side rails of the bedstead are in close relation, as when the bed is in its single form, one
section of each slat is folded upon the other j section, and the slats in their folded forms are disposed upon the usual supports on the inner faces of the side rails. When the side rails are moved apart to their limit, the hinged sections may be swung interposition to aline and may then be arranged each with a free end upon a corresponding slat-rest.
With this construction it will be seen that a single bed or a double bed may be had and that when the parts are 'in the single form they are held by the hooks against displacement, while when in the double form they are held in proper spaced relation by the slats, and as additional supports for the bottoms of the sections of the head and foot board when the bedstead is in its single form brackets 25 are attached to the inner sides of the posts of the head and foot board and which brackets receive the ends of the sections.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- An extensible bedstead comprising head and foot boards each including a post having a board-section attached thereto and having transverse alining-slots, bolts engaged with each board-section and slidably engaged in the slots of the other board-section, hooks at the inner end of each board-section, keepers on the posts for engagement by the hooks, and side rails connecting the corresponding posts of the head and foot boards.
2. An extensible bedstead comprising head and foot boards each including a post having a board-section attached thereto and having transverse a1ining-slots, bolts engaged with each board-section and slidably engaged in the slots of the other board-section, hooks at the inner end of each board-section, keepers on the posts for engagement by the hooks, side rails connecting the corresponding posts of the head and foot boards, slat-rests carried by the side rails and slats each consisting of two sections hinged together and adapted to aline or to lie one upon the other, said sections being adapted to lie with their free ends upon the slat-rests when the side rails are spaced to their limit and to lie with one section upon both rests when the side rails are in close relation.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROGER LEE BETTS.
