Beit known that l, ROBERT BOLLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeland, in the county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Beds 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i

This invention relates to bedsteads, and more particularly to the extension variety of bedsteads.

One object rof the invention is to provide a bedstead of such character that it may be readily changed from a double to a single bedstead.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a bedstead wherein the head and foot boards will be so constructed and arranged that each may receive an intermediate member for converting the bedstead from a single to a double one and wherein the slats of the bedstead will be so constructed as to accommodate either a single or double bedstead.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a comparatively simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient bedstead of the adjustable character hereinafter set forth.

Vithv these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the present invention.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the removable portions in position and illustrating the side portions separated therefrom, the connecting-strips being broken to permit of such separation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the headsection in position as a single bed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the removable head-section. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a portion of one of the side pieces, showing the arrangement of the slats. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the posts and its plate, the plate being removed from the post to show the openings. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of an end of one of the side rails.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly to the construction embodying a single bedstead, it will be seen that the reference characters 1 and 2 designate sections forming the head of the bedstead and the characters 3 and 4indicate sections of the footboard of the bedstead, the sections of the vheadboard being of a width corresponding to the alining footboard.

The headboard-sections are provided with posts 6 and 7 along their outer longitudinal edges, upon the inner face of each of which is a pair of upper and lower sockets 8 and 9, and over each of these pair of sockets is arranged a plate 12, in each of which is formed a pair of alining keyhole-slots 13 and 14, which register, respectively, with the upper and lower openings 8 and 9 ofthe head-posts, the plates being secured to the said posts by means of suitable screws 15 or other fastenings, as well understood.

The posts 16 and 17 of the footboard-sections are each provided with upper and lower recesses similar to those described in connection with the posts of the headboard and over which are fitted plates 12, which are also provided with the upper and lower keyholeslots 13 and 14. These plates of the head and foot boards with their keyhole-slots register with respect to the slots of a head-section and a foot-section for the reception of the upper and lower heads 22 and 23 in the ends of the side rails 24 in a manner well understood. It is obvious, however, that but one keyhole-slot in the head and foot boards and a single-headed member in the ends of the corresponding rails may be employed for the purpose of supporting the side rails with respect to the head and foot board sections. Each side rail is provided upon its inner face with the usual notched cleat 25, the notches 26 of each rail being in alincment with the notches upon the inner face of theopposite rail for the reception of the slats 27, to be hereinafter more fully described.

Secured throughout the back of each of the head- posts 6 and 7 is a strip of wood or other suitable material 28 and 29, respectively, while secured along the longitudinal inner edge of each head-section is another strip 30 and 31. It will thus be understood that there are four cleats or strips projecting from the rear of the head-section and reference to the drawings will disclose that each of these IOO four strips has a series of openings 32 through their side faces, the openings or slots 32 of each rear strip or cleat alining in series, one series above another for the reception of horizontal strips 33, 34, and 35, the ends of the strips 33 and 35 being fixedly secured in the openings or slots 32 of the rear longitudinal cleat or strip 28, with their opposite ends enlarged, as at 33 and 35', for tight iit in the corresponding openings or slots 32 of the rear cleat or strip 29, the horizontal strip 34 being fixedly secured in the intermediate slot or opening in the head-post 29 and passed through thev remaining alining slots in the strips 30 and 31 and enlarged, as at 34,for tight detachable fit in the corresponding intermediate slot of the rear cleat or slot 38. When the head-sections 1 and 2 have their inner longitudinal edges in engagement with each other, these strips 33, 34, and 35 are fitted in the alining openings in the said strips 28,29, 30, and 31 with their ends lying Hush with the outer edges ,or faces of the headposts 6 and 7. In practice the outer faces of these longitudinal strips 28, 29, 30, and 31 and the horizontal strips 33, 34, and 35 would be hidden from view by reason of a panel work or boarding, (not shown in the drawings,) but which would be employed in practice for the purpose of protecting and hiding the parts arranged therebetween and the back of the panel-work of the headboards 1 .and 2.

The posts 16 and 1.7 of the footboards also have longitudinal cleats 36, 37, 38, and 39, respectively, which are provided with openings or slots 40 for the reception of three horizontally-arranged strips 41, 42, and 43, designed for sliding engagement in the slots and whereby the footboards may be supported in a manner similar to that described in connection with the headboard. It may be stated that the horizontal strip 42 is fiXedly secured to the foot-post 36 and has its opposite end 42 lenlarged for engagement in the corresponding slotI in the foot-post 37, the corresponding ends of the horizontal members or strips 41 and 43 being fiXedly secured in the corresponding slots of the footboard 37 and passed through alining slots in the remaining vertical or longitudinal strips with their free ends 41v and 43 enlarged forV tight detachable t in the corresponding fit-slots of the foot-post 36. It might be stated at this time that the enlargements at the free ends of certain of the horizontal strips of the head and foot board sections are enlarged not only for the purpose of tight fit within the corresponding slots of the posts, but also to limit the outward movement of the head and foot board sections when they are separated for the purpose of inserting the intermediate head or foot section for the purpose of converting the bedstead from a single to a double one. It

might be stated also at this time that lthe horizontal strips or members will be hidden from view by a panel work or boarding, causing the sliding strips or members 41, 42, and 43 to be confined therebetween and the rear faces of the panel-work of the footboard-sections.

From the foregoing the construction of a single bedstead in accordance with my invention will be understood, and in order that the extensible feature of my invention will be readily comprehended reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings will disclose that the headboardsection 44 is constructed with its forward face of the same character as that employed for the head-section hereinbefore described, the rear face 45 of the detachable head-section having longitudinal strips 46 and 47 along its edges upon each of which is disposed an upper and lower plate 48 and 49 and 48 and 49', respectively. Each of these plates is secured to the correspondinglongitudinal strip 46 and 47 by means of rivets or the like 50 and are bent outwardly intermediate their ends, as at 51, and then downwardly, as at 52, the parts 52 of each plate lying parallel with the corresponding face of the corresponding strips 46 and 47. Now when it is desired to convert the bedstead from a single to a double one these hooked plates are engaged with the horizontal strips 33 and 35 of the headboard-sections. rear faces of the strips 46 and 47 of the detachable head-section 44 have their upper and lower hook-plates arranged to engage over the corresponding upper and lower horizontal strips 33 and 35, the portions 51 of the hook-plates lying upon the upper edge of the corresponding horizontal strip with their downwardly-bent portions 52 lying flush with the outer faces of the said strips. It will be observed that these hook-plates do not engage the intermediate horizontal strip 34, the plates for engaging this particular strip being entirely unnecessary. The footboard is provided with a detachable foot-section 53, having its back constructed and arranged the same as the back of the detachable headboard-section, so that it may be engaged with thecorresponding upper and lower horizontal strips 41 and 43 of the footboard. It will thus be understood that when the head and foot sections of a single bedstead are supported in the manner described these detachable head and foot board sections may be inserted intermediate the end sections, converting the bedstead from a single to a double one. It will be understood, too, that these intermediate detachable head and foot board sections may be readily detached from the head and foot board sections and the corresponding horizontal strips of the head and foot boards, together with the sections to which they are secured, may be forced in- Wardly toward each other with respect to the sections of the head and foot boards to fill up ln other words, the

the spaces caused by the withdrawal of the intermediate sections, as should now be well understood.

The head-sections, including the intermediate detachable one, are provided with upper strips 53 for the purpose of ornamentation, and the tops of the footboards are provided with similar strips 54 for a like purpose. Of course this is but one feature of ornamentation, and the head and foot boards may have their exterior surfaces ornamented in any suitable manner-such, for instance, as panel-work or the like.

Since the rails carried by the respective end sections of the head and foot boards are adjustable toward and away from'each other, it is obvious that slats should be used with my improved bedstead of such character that they may be adjusted according to the adjustment of the head-sections and rails 24 toward and away from each other. Therefore it will be seen that I construct the slats so that they may be adjustable, each slat consisting of two members 55 and 56, arranged one upon the other, the inner end of each strip 55 and 56 having a loop 57 and 58, respectively, engaging the opposite strip 55 and 56, whereby the strips 55 and 56 may be in telescopic association with each other, so that their i'ree ends may be engaged in the corresponding notches 26 of the rails 24 in the manner which should now be Well understood.

What is claimed is- 1. A bedstead comprising head and foot boards including end and intermediate sections, rails connecting the end sections ofthe head and foot boards, opposing horizontal strips carried by the end sections of the head and foot boards, hooked attaching members carried by the intermediate sections of the head and foot boards for engagement with the said horizontal strips, and means carried by said strip for limiting the separation of the said end sections.

2. A'bedstead comprising head and foot boards including end and intermediate sections, rails connected to the end sections of the head and foot boards, opposing horizontal strips carried by the end sections of the head and foot boards, hooked attachingplates carried by the intermediate sections of the head and foot boards for engagement with said horizontal strips, side posts associated with said end sections, said side posts having openings therein for the passage of said strips, and shoulders formed on said strips to engage the said side posts to limit the separation of the said end sections.
