- NITED STATES PATEN Prion.
CHARLES W. SANTMYER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGN OR OF ONE- THIRD TO THOMAS L. KEMP, OF SAME PLACE.
BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,934, dated December 18, 1900- Application filed January 30,1900. Serial No. 3,326. (No model.)
1 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. SANT- MYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the general class of beds, but more particularly the side rails thereof, and has for its object to provide an efficient side rail which will rigidly connect the head and foot boards, so that a strong structure will be provided which is adapted to be quickly and easily set up and knocked down whenever occasion demands.
With this object in View my invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of abed constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar enlarged view of one of the side rails detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the end of the rail and through one of the sockets, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the corner-blocks.
1 is the headboard, and 2 the footboard, of any well-known construction, to each standard or leg of which is secured sockets 3, 4., 5, and 6, respectively. These sockets each comprise a tubular sleeve 7, designed to be secured to one of the legs or standards of the head or foot board and from which projects a block 8, out at its free end on an angle slightly greater than a right angle, as will be fully explained hereinafter. Two parallel I'- shaped slots 9 and 10 are also provided in the said block to form sockets for the parallel hooked ends of the side rails 11. In forming these rails I prefer to stamp the same out of sheet metal to form a blank 12, comprising the side flange 13, on each end of which is a right- angular finger 14 and 14, the top or spring-supporting surface 15 having at each end atongue l6 and 16 and the inner flanges 17 and 17 forming the second or parallel fingers 18 and l8 and the bracing- arms 19 and 19. Attention is called to the fact that the bearing edges 20 of the side flanges 13 and the edges 21 of the arms 19 and 19 are out at an angle less than a right angle to the longitudinal center of the side rails, so that when the tongues 16 and 16 are bent down to connect them the ends of said side rails will be shaped to coincide with the edges of the blocks 8, whereby a Wedge-like joint is made when the parts are assembled to give additional strength and rigidity to the entire structure.
After the side rails are properly shaped it will be noticed that the inner flanges terminate a short distance from the ends thereof, and although only the outside flange and top remain throughout the greater portion of the length of the rail the peculiar formation of the ends gives sufficient strength thereto to support any normal strain to which they might be subjected.
Inasmuch as the top edges of the blocks and the hooked fingers are flush when the bedstead is set up, a smooth bearing-surface is provided for the bed-springs, and these fingers may be withdrawn from their sockets to take the bed apart whenever occasion arises.
While I have specifically described my invention in detail, I do not wish to be understood as in any way limiting myself to the exact construction thereof, as I am aware that slight departures therefrom might be made and changes in shape could occur without departing from or affecting the scope of my invention.
I claim- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a head and foot board of a bed, and corner-blocks provided with slots secured thereto, of side rails for engagement with said blocks, said rails each being stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and bent into form to constitute a side flange, on each end of which is a supporting-finger, a top or spring-supporting flange, on each end of which is a supporting-finger parallel with the first-referred-to finger, said fingers being adapted to engage slots in the respective corner-blocks.
2. In a corner-fastening for bedsteads, the combination with the head and foot board thereof, each carrying blocks out at their free ends on an angle slightly less than a right angle and provided with two parallel I'-sl1aped slots, of side rails engaging said blocks and having F-shaped parallel fingers adapted to engage said slots, the ends of said rails being beveled to correspond to the ends of the blocks so as to form a Wedge-joint when said blocks and rails are clamped together, said side rails being struck up from a single piece of metal. 10 I In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
