To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal bedsteads.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved boltless construction for metal bedsteads, whereby the members of the bedstead and particularly the members forming the head and foot thereof, may be connected without the use of exposed studs and nuts heretofore in common use for this purpose.
To this end, my invention consists of the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fully illustratedFigure 1 is an end View of the head or foot of a bedstead embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sect-ion thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 illustrate modifications of certain features of my invention.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, A designates, as a whole, an end of a metal bedstead of my invention, comprising posts 1, top and bottom transverse members 2 and 3 which connect said posts, and upright members 4 which connect said transverse members 2 and 3. One of the transverse members, as shown, the upper member 2, is hollow, and may be connected to the posts 1 in any suitable manner, desirable means for the purpose, where the posts 1 are hollow, being that shown and described in United States Letters Patent -No. 911,863, issued to me February 9, 1909,
to which. reference is made for a detailed description thereof. As shown, the other transverse member, the member 3, is formed by an angle bar the ends of which are embedded in the corner fastenings or dove tails 5 on the posts 1.
The posts 1 and upright members 4 are shown as being hollow, but may be either hollow or solid, as desired. If desired, the transverse members 3 may also be made hollow, as shown in Fig.- 5, in which 3 designates said hollow member, and 4 one of the upright members.
The upright members 4 are connected to the transverse members 2 and 3 in the following manner: Secured in the upper ends of said members 4, designed to be connected to the transverse member 2, are plates 6, secured in which are separate studs 7, which may be either riveted into the plates 6, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be screw threaded thereto to provide for adjusting the lengths of said studs. The latter construction is shown in Fig. 6, in which 4 designates one of the upright members, 6 the plate secured therein, and 7 the stud having screw threaded engagement with said plate 6 Desirable means for securing the plates 6 into the ends of the hollow members 4, consist of lugs S projecting from the edges of said plates which engage slots 9 formed in the ends of the members 4. After the plates 6 have been inserted into the hollow members 4 and the lugs 8 engaged with the slots 9, the ends of the members 4, outside of the plates 6 and lugs 8, are crimped inwardly over said plates, which can be conveniently accomplished by means of a suitable calking tool, the mouth of which is flared or beveled, in a usual manner. My invention, however, contemplates equally the use of any other desired or approved means for securing said plates in the ends of said upright members 4.
The studs 7 form projections at the ends of the members 4 and extend through holes 10 formed in the side of the hollow trans verse member 2 into the interior of said hollow member, and are provided with holes 11 through which a rod 12 is inserted inside of said hollow member, which will operate in an obvious manner to lock the members 4 to the member 2 and also to prevent turning of said members 4. As shown, said rod 12 forms the tie rod which connects the posts 1 through the hollow member 2.
Secured in the lower ends of the upright members 4, are plates 13 having screw threaded shanks 14 which form substan tially axial projections at the ends of the rods 4 and which engage correspondingly screw threaded openings in the lower transverse member 3.
To hide the joint between the ends of the upright members 4 and the transverse members 2 and 3, suitable ornaments 15 may be used.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a modified construction embodying my invention, said modification consisting in forming the projections on opposite ends of the upright members on rods which extend lengthwise through said upright members, said upright members being hollow.
Referring now to said Fig. 1, 2 3 designate the transverse members, respectively, 4: one of the upright members, which are hollow, 6 and 13 plates secured in the opposite ends of said hollow upright members 1 and 16 rods which extend lengthwise through the upright members. The ends of the rods 16 pass through holes in the plates 6 13 and project at both ends, thus forming projections at the ends thereof. v()ne end of each of the rods 16 is adapted to be connected to one of the transverse members, as the member 3 in any suitable manner, as by screw threads thereon which engage screw threaded holes in said member 3 The opposite ends of the rods 16 extend through holes 10 formed in the side of the other transverse member 2 and are provided with holes through which the rod 12 is insertedinside of said hollow member 2 formed through the studs 7 in the construction heretofore described. To facilitate inserting the rod 12 through the eyes 17 inside of the transverse member 2 it is desirable that they shall all project equal dis tances so as to bring said eyes into alinement. This can be conveniently effected by screw threading said rods 16 into rigid parts of the upright members 1 As shown, said rods are screw threaded into the Plates 13 in the lower ends of said upright members.
I claim 1. An end for a metal bedstead, comprising spaced first members, one of which is hollow, and second members which connect said spaced first members, boltless means within said hollow first member for collectively securing an end of each of said second members to said hollow first member, and means for separately connecting the opposite ends of said second members to the other first member, substantially as described.
2. An end for a metal bedstead, comprising posts, upper and lower transverse members which connect said posts, said transverse members comprising a hollow member, upright members, and means for connecting said upright members to said transverse members, the means for connecting said upright members to said hollow transverse member comprising parts of or projections on said upright members which extend through holes formed in said hollow transverse member and which are provided with holes, and a rod inserted through said holes inside of said hollow transverse member,
and means for separately connecting the other ends of said upright members to the other transverse member, said means comprising screw threaded projections on the opposite ends of the upright members which engage screw threaded holes in the other through holes formed in said hollow member, and which are provided with holes through which the tie rod within said hollow member extends, and screw threaded projections on the opposite ends of said upright members which engage screw threaded holes in the other transverse member, substantially as described.
4:. An end for a metal bedstead, comprising spaced members comprising a hollow member and hollow members which connect said spaced first members, the means for connecting said hollow second members to said hollow first member comprising plates secured in the ends of said hollow second members, separate studs or lugs secured in said plates which extend through holes formed in said hollow first member and which are provided with holes, and a rod inserted through said holes inside of said hollow first member, substantially as described.
