BEDSTEAD CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,366, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed January 6, 1904. Serial No. 187,968.
'To all whom/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED TAYLOR, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in the city of Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedstead Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bedstead construction, and is designed to en able the framework of a spring-mattress to be embodied with that of the bedstead Whereby the use of the side frame-bars as such alone may be entirely dispensed with and the construction of the bedstead-frame as a whole simplified and cheapened.
As is well known, a bedstead, whether of wood or iron, is usually composed of a head and foot end frame connected together by si( fi'ame-bai's which are secured to the end frames by dovetailed or look joints, slats being placed across from side bar to side bar to sustain the mattress. This construction, however desirable where a hair or flock mattress is used, is altogether unnecessary with a modern spring or box mattress, the framework of wh ch is sufficiently strong in itself to form the frame of the bedstead. In my improvement, therefore, I purpose to dispense altogether with the customary side frames of a bedstead and by means of a hook member of special construction fastened to the framework of a spring or box mattress removably secure the mattressframe to the head and foot end frames of the bedstead, and thereby constitute the mattress frame on the end frames the main support of the bed. The particular construction of the fastening and themanner of its application is fully set forth in the following specification, and illustrated in the drawings which accompany it, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bedstead, showing the application of a mattress-frame to the head and foot end frames under my improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail, in side elevation, of the end frame attachment to a wooden mattress-frame. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. A shows the modification of the device in its application to a tubular mattress-frame. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the attachment with a supplementary clasp, and Fig. 6 is a plan of the same.
In the drawings, the frame of the mattress is represented by 2, and the posts of the head or foot end frames by 3.
Through each post 3 a steel pin 4 is secured, the ends of which project slightly on each side beyond the diameter of the post, and secured to each corner of the mattress frame is a member conformed to partially embrace, as at 5, the posts 3 and having a hook portion 6 on each side of the post that will engage the projecting ends of the pin 4 and which from their wedge shape will when pressed down draw the surface 5 into tight contact with the round of the post 3. IN here the mattress-frame 2 is of wood, the fastening member is provided with a portion 7, extending along the outer side of 2, to which it may be secured by screws, and an ample surface is afforded on the face 8 to resist compression of the wood of the mattress-frame, while a portion 9, extending between 7 and 8 on the under side, strengthens the lateral portion, affords a support for the frame against downward strain, and may be provided with small bolts through the depth of the frame. When so desired, the post attachment 5 may be extended from that of the mattress-frame, as indicated in the left-hand side of Fig. 1 and in Figs. 5 and 6. Where the mattress-frame is made of metal tube, the fastening member is adapted to this shape and forms a socket, as 14: in Fig. 4, to receive the tube end, to which it is secured by pins or by other means. This constitutes the primary element of my invention, the application of which is selfevident.
The corners of any mattress-frame being provided with the attaching members, the hollow portion 5 of the fastening is brought against the round of the corner-posts of the head and foot frames and the mattress-frame 2 pressed down, when the hook members 6 of the fastening engage the projecting ends of the pins 4 and by virtue of the taper of the hooks draw the posts 3 tightly into the hollow 5 of the fastening. If a more positive support is desired, the position of the pins may be arranged so that the lower side of the portion 5 of the fastening will bottom on a collar or shoulder 10, which may be the cast attachment to the posts 3 of the cross-bracing of the end frames of the bedstead.
A slidable sleeve of ornamental finished brass may be slipped from above over the fastening when secured and will afford a covering to the junction on the exposed sides.
As a supplementary means of drawing the post 3 into the hollow 5 of the casting and at the same time affording a finish to the open gap left by the hooks 6 I may apply (see Figs. 5 and 6) a clasp 11, provided with double hooks 12, which will engage pins or projections 13, cast on the outer sides of 5, and which being hammered down over them will draw the whole fastening tightly into engagement and more effectually secure it.
Having now particularly described the nature of my improvement and the manner of its application, I declare that what I claim as new, and desire to be protected inby Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bedstead having head and foot end frames, and a mattress-frame; means for securing the latter to the corner-posts of the end frames, said means comprising apin projecting through each corner-post of the end frames, the ends of which pins project beyond the diameter of the posts, an attachment secured at each corner of the mattress-frame comprising three connected portions extend ing along the side, end and under side of the mattress-frame, means for securing said attachment to the mattress-frame, comprising 35 bolts passed through the mattress-frame and the under side portion of the attachment, the screws passing through the side portion of the attachment into the mattress-frame, said attachment also including a projecting portion adapted to fit around and onto the posts and having downwardly-projecting hooks on each side to engage the ends of the aforesaid pins through the posts a collar secured to the posts below the projecting pin, said attachment being adapted when in its normal postengaging position, to rest upon said collar for the purposes specified.
2. As a means for securing the frame of a mattress to the end frames of a bedstead; the combination with an attaching member secured to each corner of the mattress-frame and designed to engage the ends of a pin through each corner-post of the end frames, a supplementary clasp to each attaching member round the opposite side of the post and having tapered hooks toengage projections on the post-engaging portion of the attaching member, whereby the clasp and post engaging portion of the attaching member may be drawn to tightly inclose the post.
