' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 7, 1913. Serial No. 7 ,48.
Be it known that I,Lonis Fin-inn, a subect of the Czar'of Russia, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Corner- Fastenings for Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
- j The invention pertains more particularly to corner fastenings for metal bedsteads, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a fastener whose members are formed .of sheet steel andare not only, of extremely durable character but capable of convenient. and efficient use. 1 i
A-'further purpcse of the invention is to provide a corner fastening which will present smooth exterior surfaces and not mar the appearance of't-he other portions of a The corner fastening of my invention coin- .prises two interlocking parts, each preferi The details of the interlocking members of the fastening will be explained hereinafter in connection with the drawings forming a part'of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly bro-ken away, of a bedstead equipped Wlth corner 'fastenings'embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through a portion of a bedstead-post and side rail, jwith the corner fasten ng members composing my invention shown as connecting said post and side rail, the section being on the dotted line 22 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the same on the dotted line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the transverse head rail and longitudinal side rail being partly broken away; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end portion of a siderail of a bedstead having secured thereto one memberof the corner fastening of my invention; Figs. 5, '6 and 7 are correspond ng perspectitle views showing some mod ficat ons in *Patented June 3 1 9 13.
details of that member of the corner fasten- I ing carried by the side rails;;Fig. 8 is a perspective view of that member of the corner fastening to'be secured to the post and adapted on its side to receive the transverse end rail ofthe bedstead and at its outer or free end to receive and interlock with the fastening member carried by. the
side rail; Fig. 9'represents in top elevation the metal blank from which, by bending, the
fastening member illustrated in Fig. 8 is L produced, and Fig.- 10 is an end view, taken from the left hand end of Fig; 8, of the fastening member produced from the blank shown in Fig. 9. r
In the drawings, posts, 16 the usual angle iron side rail, and 1-7 the customary angle iron transverse end rail of a bedstead. The two members of my designates the cor'iier corner fastening are denoted byt-he reference numerals 18, 19, respectively, the 1116111 ber 18 being connected with the corner-post and receiving one end of the end rail 17, and the member 19 being bolted or otherwise secured to the end of the side rail 16 and adapted to deta'chably interlock with the member 18.- I
The 'inember 18 is formed from one integral sheet steel blank of the character shown in Fig. .9, in which the dotted lines indicate the fold lines of the blank on which 7 .the blank is folded to transform it into the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 10. Themember 18 comprises integrally a top 20, 'and vertical sides 21, 22, the side 22 pre- SQIltIHQ- an outer plain vertical surface and 1 the side 21 having formed in it a rightangu- 'lar slot- 23 to receive the end of the end rail 17 'of the bedstead. The lower edge of the side 22 connects with a bottom section'2 1 of the-blank and the edge of this section 2 1 is formed with integral lugs or projections 25 which enter and are upset within correspondingly shaped openings 126 formed in the side member or section 21, as will be understood on reference-to Figs; 8- and9, whereby the blank is securely fastened in rectangular outline. The section 24 representing the bottom ofthe fastening member 18 has a lip 26 cut therein, and said lip is bent upwardly at its outer end tocon stitute a" rigid plate standing immediately at the front of the vertical member of the' angle iron end rail 17, so that when the said endrail is insertedthrough the right-angular slot, 23in the side 21 it wll'l' liebetween the post and said lip 26, as shown in Fig. 2, in which it will'be seen that the end rail 17 at its upper horizontal flange engages the bolt 27 which extends through'aihole in the top 20 of the member 18. The top 20 and lip 26 and engages a threaded hole in the rail" 17, The end rail 17 is, at its end, thussupported in the right-angular slot 23 of the side 21, but is further fastened by the bolt 27 and its relation to the post 15 and bottom 24 of the member 18 have at their outer edges corresponding apertured lugs '28 which are inserted through slots formed] in the post 15 and receive a vertical wedge 29, whereby said member 18 becomes fastened to. the post in a' manner well understood in thisart.
That portion of the blank constituting the top 20 is formed with an extending tongue portion 30 subdivided. on dotted lines,
3132 into sections 33, 34, 35, and said portion 30, when folded downwardly onth'e dotted line 36, affords in the section 33 an inwardly set front for the member 18, while the section'3 l of said portion 30 forms a lower layer bearing upon the upper surface of the bottom 24 and the section 35, when bent upwardly on the dotted line 32, presents what maybe termed a vertical hook portion whose upper edge is below the upper edge of the sides 21, 22. The portion 35 is separated by avertical space from the section 33, as. shown in Fig. 1, and into-this space is passed certain engaging parts of the fastening member 19 when the two me'mbers of the fastener are to be interlocked. The hookportion .35 is betweenthe sides 21, 22 and preferably set inwardly from the vertical edges of the same. The section 35 is formed at its opposite side edges with lugs 37 which, when the blank is folded to convert it into the fastening member 18, are
inserted into and headed within holes 38 formed in the side sections 21,22, thereby aiding inlocking said side sections together and in rigidly maintaining'thc section 35 in vertical position. I have formed the hook section 35 both of one layer of material'and of two layers of material, in accordance with the size of the'bedstead employing the bed fastening, and when the hook section is to be formed of two layers of material, I add to the section 2 1 of the blank an exten sion 39, which when turned upwardly from the bottom section.21 on the fold line 40, will lie at the outer side of and closely against the hook section 35, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, thereby increasing the thickness of the hook section and aiding in rigidly supporting the same and in. enabling the member 18 to properly sustain the weight 1,oee,425
exerted on it by the fastening member 19.
VVhen the extension 39 is omitted from the bottom section 24, then 'the hook section 35 will be of a single layer. The blank shown in Fig. 9 may, therefore, be folded into the rectangular fastening member 18 shown in Fig. 8 and afforded in one integral piece of sheet steel theftop I20, bottom 24:, vertica.
parallel. sides 21, 22,;lugs 28 to enter the post. 15, a lip or plate '26 to which the end of, the end rail 17 may be secured, and a forward hook construction to receive the fastening member 19,.'
The fastening member 19 will be formed of steel and fastened by rivetsor bolts 41. or otherwise upon the end of theside rail 16, and-said member 19 extends across the ,top and down the sides of said side rail and has at its outer end a downwardly projecting portion composed partly of the sides -12 and the end 43 of said member 19 to enter between the sections 33, 35 of the member 18 and thereby interlock with said member, asshown in Fig. 2. The section 35 of the member 18 affords an upwardly extending hook portion and the outer end'of the member 19 a downwardly extending hook member to tightly fit between the sections 33, 35 of the member 18 with, by preference, a wedging action. The sides 42 of the member 19 will preferably beislotted, as" at .44, to form the downwardly projecting hook portion and the slots 44 should only be of sufficient width to snugly engage theouter vertical front part-of the hook section 'on the member 18, whether said 'hook section be ofone layer or two layers. -The fastening member-19 is of b'oxlike.cdnstruction and when cngagedwith the member .18 constitutes, in the preferred construction, a substantial continuation, especially at the top, of the surfaces thereof. I prefer to provide the fastening member 19 with the slots 44, as shown in Fig. 4, so that there may not only be a binding action of the hook portion of the member 19 at the inner side of the hook portion of the member 1.8, but that in the slots 44 there shall be a binding 01 wedging'action against the front-and'rear surfaces of the hook portion of the member 18, but I do not desire to limit the invention to the provision of the slots 14- in the sides of the member 19, since said member admits of various modifications without impairing its function or the function of the member 18. For instance, I may construct the interlocking memben carried by the side'rail in the mannerillustrated in Fig. 5 in which I designate said-member, being a modification,.-i-5 and which member is formed at its outer end with downwardly projecting hook portions at) to pass within the hook poi-t on of the member 18; The member 45 at its outer side is formed with a slot 17 to straddlc thehook section of the memberlS, and
.40 Y said hook-portion of the side-rail member,
: in Fig; 6
in-thatrespeot there is 310m great-deal ot difference between the member 19, shown in Figs: 1 and 4, and the member l5, shown in w illustratethe side railfasten- I mg member 48 as formed init-s sides with slots 49 and as having the intermediate por-p leave shoulders 51 to engage the section 33 'f'tionf' 50' 012E its end depressed 'inwardly to at "the member 18' instead otha'ving' theim'ireignd Surface of i member lSengage gthe ection-33.] P
" ",The rail fastening member 52, shown in Fig. 7, is formed in its sides with the slots 531, and with no downwardly. depending front or outer end plate, the endedgesof the sides of the member 52 being depended on to :engage thesection 33 of-the -fastening member 18. The several side rail fastening rail members will beina'de use of; 7
My invention resides more largely in the construction of member 19, itwill be a mat-'- fastening member 18 and in the provisi'on "for cooperation therewith of-a suitable side rail fasteningmember adapted to interlock i with the outer hook-portion: of the member turned lip to which the endof said end-rail prising a member 18. The member 18 as constructed by, me'
is of extremely durable character and ca s.
