UNITED STATES PATENT OEETcE.
LOUIS 'J. KUTZ, OF CLEVELAND. OHIO.
FURNITURE-LOCK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,949, dated September 13, 1904. Application filed October 26, 1903. Serial No- 178545. (No model.)
To all whom, it may conccrm.
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. KU'IZ, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furniture-Locks, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture-locks, and is especially adapted for use in securing the side rails to the cornerposts of metal beds.
It is the object of the invention, therefore, to provide a lock between each side rail and each corner-post, and any suitable form of bed may be used, whether it be made of iron or other material; but I prefer to apply the invention to metal bedsteads.
The invention may also be summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, description, and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the device which I term the socket. Fig. 2 is a perspective .view of a portion which engages within the socket and which is secured to the end of the side rail, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device with the parts in partial engagement.
In a bed constructed to embody my invention each bed-post A is embraced by a cylindrical part b of a socket B. This socket I have shown as being rectangular in shape; but it may be of any suitable form, this being most convenient and best adapted for my invention. The socket B is secured to the rail O of the bed either rigidly or by any other suitable connection. I prefer, however, to cast these sockets B integral with the end rails.
I/Vithin the socket B is an upwardly-extending tongue 6, secured thereto, asshown, and having its free end extending up within the opening within said socketand having its back face 6 inclined forward at the top. The interior of the side walls of the socket B are provided with stops 6 and b, as shown, and the top wall is recessed at 5 all for a purpose which will be explained hereinafter.
On both ends of each side rail D is a lockingpiece E, having a plate portion E of substantially the size of the opening in the front of the socket B and adapted to fit within the side walls and above the lower end wall. This plate portion E has a loop 6 extending from the face thereof in a manner such that when it is placed over the tongue I) the tongue will pass freely through the same and draw the plate E against the stops 6 and a and against the recessed portion If of the socket, this recessed portion If permitting the entrance of the plate E between the two side walls of the socket B.
It will be seen that when the locking-piece E is forced downward until the lower end of the plate E strikes the lower wall of the socket B the inclined face of the tongue 5 will tend to draw the plate tightly against the stops Z2 5 and the recessed portion If.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a furniture-lock, in combination, a socket having an opening in its front, a tongue having a free upper end and carried within the socket back of said opening, a lockingpiece provided with a loop adapted to hook over said tongue, and adapted to stand between the walls of said socket and close said opening.
2. In a furniture-lock, in combination, a socket having a rectangular opening in its front, a tongue having a free upperend and carried within the socket back of said opening, a locking-piece provided with a loop adapted to hook over said tongue, and having a plate adapted to stand between the walls of said socket and close said rectangular opening.
3. In a furniture-lock, in combination, a socket having an opening in itsfront, a tongue having a free upper end and carried within the socket back of said opening, a lockingpiece provided with a loop adapted to hook over said tongue and adapted to stand between the walls of said socket and close said opening, and a stop within the socket and back from the front thereof and adapted to be engaged by said locking-piece.
4:. In a furniture-lock, in combination, a
rectangular socket, an upwardly-extending tongue secured wholly within said socket, a locking-piece, a loop projecting therefrom for engaging said tongue, said tongue being adapted to draw said locking-piece and arranged to close the opening in said socket, and stops provided therein for resisting the drawing of said locking-piece by said tongue.
5. The combination, with a bed-post, of a sleeve embracing said post and having a socket open on its front side, a tongue within said socket extending upward and free at its upper end, and a locking-piece adapted to be secured to the side rail of the bed and having a loop adapted to hook over said tongue and a plate adapted to close said opening.
6. The combination with a bed-post of a rectangular socket carried thereby, a tongue rigidly secured within said socket and having an inclined face, stops within said socket, a locking-piece having a plate adapted to engage within said socket and close the opening therein, and a loop on the face of said plate for engaging said tongue.
7. The combination with a bed-post, of a sleeve embracing said post, a rectangular socket rigid with said sleeve and secured to the end rail of the bed, said socket having a recessed upper wall, an upwardly-extending tongue wholly within said socket, stops provided upon the inner wall of the same, a locking-piece having a plate adapted to engage within the' side walls of said socket and to fit within said recess in the upper wall, and a loop extending from the face of said plate for engaging said tongue, said plate portion of said locking-piece closing the opening in said socket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. LOUIS J. KUTZ.
