CORNER-POST FASTENER.

Be it known that I, MORRIS B. OKUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (lookand State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Corner-Post F asteners, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to corner post fasteners for beds and has for its object the provision of improved fastening means which is of use not only with metal posts but wooden posts as well, and which is also of use in connection with wooden side rails. The means of my invention are of such a character that when used in connection with wooden side rails that the side rails may be flush at their extremities against the bed posts.

I will explain my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of my improved corner post fastener applied to a round metal post;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 of Fig. 3 is an -end view of the metal side rail;

Fig. 1 is an end view of the corner post fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2;

Fig. 5 is a side view partly in section showing my improved means applied to a wooden post with wooden side rails;

Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 5;

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1,

2, 3 and 1, I show a round corner post 10 and a side rail 11 which are to be demountably secured together to form the bed structure. The means employed to unite these two elements are of such a character that the side rail may be reversed, thus forming What is technically known in the art, a reversible connection for the side rail. The means utilized include a framework having the side wall 12, bottom wall 13, end wall 14, and top wall 15. The end rail 16, which is preferably of the angle iron type as shown, is riveted to the

20 and 21, which extensions are also punched out of the body of the material of the wall 14. as more clearly apparent from Fig. 2. The side rail 11 has a downwardly bent portion 22, certain parts of the wall 23 of the side rail being cut away or mitered to form the joint 24, these two parts being held to 'ether and strengthened by the plate 25. The downwardly projecting portion 22 thus forms an end face as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, and this end face has the slot 26 punched therefrom, and also has the

27 and 28 punched therefrom, thus forming webs or

cross pieces

29 and 30. The opening 26, as will be seen, is of such a character that it may be moved into position over the loop 19 so that the arms or

20 and 21 can form a sort of bolt-like connection with the slot 26 whenever the side rail is mounted in position against the plate 1 1 so that the loop 19 may project into the slot 26 and the side rail thereafter be moved downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The web 29 then rests upon the finger 18.

Now it will be readily apparent from this that the side rail may be reversed into the dotted position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the slot 26 again cooperates with the loop 19, while in this event web 30 co6pcrates with the finger 18. The corner post fastener is suitably held in place by the

31 and 32.

The extreme simplicity of this structure will be readily apparent in that the corner post fastener may be readily punched from a single piece of material into the form shown. It will be obvious of course that the same corner post fastener may be applied to square posts or posts of any other contour. The identical fastening means thus illustrated may be used in connection with wooden side rails, as more clearly shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8.

It will be understood of course that if a wooden post 33 is used, this wooden post is usually united to the companion post on the other side of the bed, and under this condition of things the metal side rail could be used with the wooden post with the fastening means shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 8, the same as the wooden side rail can be used, as illustrated in these figures. In these figures I have numbered parts corresponding to the parts shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inelusive with the same numbers including the sufiix a.

It will be seen that the plate in is countersunk within the wooden post 38 and held in place by the screws 34:. The plate 14 again has the fastening means consisting of the finger 18 and the loop 19 The wooden side rail 35 is provided with curved metallicj'fastening device 36 which is fixedly secured to the siderail by means of the

37 and 38. This fastening means 36 has the slot 26F and the slot 27*, and the web or cross piece 29*. The fastening means 36 is also counter-sum: in the wooden side rail and the wooden side rail is further cut away at 39 to accommodate the loop 19 It will thus be seen that this side rail can be locked in position upon the corner post fastener 14*, the side rail being entirely flush with the post as shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6.

From what has been thus described it will be seen that I have provided a fastening means which is very flexible in its character in that it is adaptable both for use in connection with metallic side rails and wooden side rails,

From what has been thus described the universal application of the fastening means will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. Means for fastening the side rail of a bed to the bed post comprising two stamped metal elements, one of said elements being box-like in form and having a projection and a finger on its vertical front face, and the other of said elements having a fiat fare adapted to engage the vertical face of the box-like element said flat face having a bayonet slot and cross piece to accommodate and interlock with said projection and finger.

2, Means for fastening the side rail of a bed to, the bed post comprising two elements, one of said elements being adapted tow having a, cross rail secured. thereto and having a headed projection and a hookshaped finger, and the other of said elements having a bayonet slot and cross pieces to reversibly accommodate and interlork with said projection and finger, said projection engaging said slot in either position of the rail.

3. A corner post fastening structure for beds comprising a member secured to the post and having means to receive a cross rail, a headed projection and a finger carried by said member, and a side rail having a bent extremity, said bent extremity having a bayonet slot to reversibly accommodate and interlock with said projection and cross pieces to interlock with said finger.

A corner post fastening structure for beds comprising a member secured to the post and having means to receive a cross rail, a headed projection and a finger carried by said member, a side rail having a bent we tremity, said bent extremity having a bay onet slot to reversibly accommodate and interlock with said projection and cross pieces to interlock with said finger to mount said side rail in position, and a strengthening plate at the bent extremity of said side rail secured to the bent extremity and the body portion of said side rail.

5. A corner post fastening structure for beds comprising a post, a box-like member secured to and projecting outwardly from the post and having a fiat top to which a cross rail may be secured, a headed projection and an upwardly extending finger struck up from the fiat front face of the member, an angle iron side rail having its extremity bent at right angles to the horizontal leg of the rail and provided with a bayonet slot to engage the headed projection and a notch in one edge to accommodate said finger.

6. A corner post fastening structure for beds comprising a post, a box-like member secured to the post and having a flat top and a vertical front face, an angle iron cross rail secured to said member in the corner formed by said top and face a side rail having its extremity bent at right angles to the body of the rail and adapted to abut said face, a headed projection and a hookshaped finger struck up from the face of said member and means on said rail extremity to engage said projection and finger to lock the side rail to the member.
