Bedstead-Fastenings.
No', 166,961I Pa1entedAug.24,1375.
-INVENTOR UNITED STATESb GEORGE BOSTWICK, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEAD-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,961, dated August 24, 1875; application filed November 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BosTwrcK, of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to lnake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.`
My invention consists of a bedstead in which the posts are made of angle-iron standard-plates, with face extensions, provided with dovetail sockets to receive corresponding dovetail Wedges or plates of the side rails and foot and head boards, whereby the latter are securely united to the angle-iron posts and each other. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a bedstead embracing my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of one of the corners of the bedstead, and Fig. 3 a perspective of one of the metallic posts, looking from the inside.
The bedstead has its head and foot boards A-B and side rails C 4secured together by metallic posts D, the head and foot boards being additionally secured by screws t at the top to these posts. These posts D are of metal plates, having two faces at right angles so a's to receive against one of their inner faces the head or foot boards, as the case may be, and against the other face the side rail C rests. The posts are cast of iron or 'other suitable met-al, and may be silvered or ornamented in any approved manner. Cast with said posts,
and on a line with their opposite faces, are
side extension holds, E, which have on their inner faces dovetail grooves or sockets b, which receive corresponding dovetail wedges c of the side rails and foot and head boards. These dovetail Wedges c are of metal, suitably secured to the side rails C and head and foot boards.
The extension holds E have inner bottom flange-seats or supports d, Fig. 3,for theloWer edges of the foot and head boards and side rails. The side rails and head andfoot boards are beveled on their inner adjacent edges c, so that When brought in contact they will form a miter-joint, the acute angle edges ofthe bevels resting in the inner angle of the platepost D, as shown in Fig. 2.
The dovetail platewedges 4c, which are of the same length of the dovetail sockets or grooves b, are preferably wedge-shaped, with their points downward, for the double purpose of rendering their insertion and removal easy, and for forming a more perfect joint with the corresponding receiving-grooves b and said wedges c, When pressed home, rest upon the flange-seats d of the extension-holds E of the angle-iron posts.
rIhe metallic posts afford great strength, with lightness of form, and are the objective feature, to which all the parts of the bedstead may be readily attached and securely held when necessary, without the use of a single screw, although I preferably use a couple of screws as adjuncts in fastening the tops of the head and foot boards to the posts. The bedstead may, in a few minutes, be taken apart, and all its separate pieces stored away compactly.
I claim- An open angle-iron post for bedsteads, having side plates E, with face-grooves b, for the fasteningwedges c of the side rails and the head and foot boards, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
GEORGE BOSTWIGK.
