BEDSTEAD FASTENING.
(No Model.)

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN H. GOEBEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEDSTEAD-FASTEN-ING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,051, dated January 2,1883.
7 Applicationfilediiinefi;1882. (NomodeL) i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN H. GoEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedstezid-Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forthin the follow- 3 is a vertical section in line y 3 Fig. l, the
post being partly broken away.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a bedstead-fastening which is simple, inexpensive, strong, and durable, the parts thereof being on the outside of the Wood-work, thus avoiding open places, and consequently preventing the lodg- Inent of vermin.
It also consists of the peculiar construction of the plates which, are connected with the head and foot posts, whereby they are prevented from being withdrawn from position, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents one of the posts of a bedstead, and B one of the side rails thereof.
U D represent two metallic plates, and E represents a metallic key or wedge, forming together the fastening for the post and rail. The plate 0 is secured to the rail B, or may be secured to the post A, and has on its outer face, at top and bottom, at the end ,adjacent to the post, two vertical lips, F, whose inner faces are dovetailed or otherwise grooved. The portion of the plateU. between the lips F is cut away or grooved, and into the space a thus formed projects the plate D, which is fastened to the post A, or may be secured to the rail B, and the end of the plate in said space having a vertical lip, G, the inner face of which is dovetailed or otherwise grooved, it now being noticed that the groove of the lip G faces the grooves of the lips F, and
'the lip G is sufficiently separated from the lips F to receive between them the key E, which is of Wedging form and has dovetailed sides.
It will be seen that when the platesG D are in position, and the key E is inserted between the lips F G and driven downwardly, the key, owing to its wedging shape, forces the lips from each other, and consequently draws the .post and rail firmly against each other, the dovetailed or grooved nature of the lips and key preventing disengagement of.the parts and producing a reliable fastening.
It will be seen that the plates and key may be made strong and durable, and all parts aresimple and inexpensive. Furthermore, both plates and key are on the outside of the post and rail, and thereare no openings in which vermin may enter and lodge.
For the purpose of securing the plate D to the post,'said plate has at the side opposite thus preventing lateral displacement or shift ing of the plate D in the post and consequent withdrawal of said plate from the post. The
flange D is serrated or corrugated, so as to interlock with the wood of the post, thus providing additional security forthe connection of the plate with the post, and preventing it from turning in the opening occupied by its shank.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bedstead-fastening consisting of two plates with grooved lips and a. wedlging-key, substantially as described, one plate projecting into the space of the other, thus placing the respective lips on opposite sides and receiving between them the key, which, being tightened against the lips, serves to draw the post and rail toward each other, in the manner stated.
2. The post formed with an opening and having a filling-piece, in combination with the connected plate formed with a flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The fastening-plate havingaflangeformed with serrations, substantially as' and for the purpose set forth.
