WILLIAM FORBES, OE WOODBURY, CONNECTICUT, AND JOSEPH T. HUBBARD, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
RAILWAY-RAIL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 12, 1917.
Application filed February 27, 1917. Serial No. 151,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM FORBES, residing at VVoodbury, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, and Josnrrr T. HUBBARD, residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, both citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail fasteners, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple construction of fasteners whereby railway rails are firmly secured to ties of any description, wood, metal, etc., and wherein the binding or contacting effect between the rail and tie may be regulated without interfering with the fasteners, as, for instance, when the rails work loose from the fasteners.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the application of the improvement,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 4-4t of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the U-shaped elements employed,
Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the keys,
Fig. 7 is a similar view of one of the wedge-shaped rail engaging elements, and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view approximately on the line 8-8 of Fig. 4:.
The tie 1 may be constructed of wood, metal, reinforced concrete or of any desired material, the same being of the standard size and shape. The tie, at suitable points from the opposite ends thereof, and adjacent to its opposite sides is provided with substantially rectangular openings 22, the same being arranged in diagonally opposite pairs, and each pair being spaced away from each other adistance greater than the thickness of the base flanges of the rails R. The tie upon its underface is provlded with notches 3 arranged in alinement with the'openings and extending inwardly from the inner or adjacent walls provided by the said openings. These notches 3 are adapted to receive the short offset legs 4: upon one of the ends of substantially rectangular members 5, the opposite end of each of the said members being formed with an angular portion or hook G. The hooks 6 are designed to overlie the base flanges of the rails R, but are disposed upwardly of the said base flanges, so that the hooks do not contact with the base flanges. The numerals 7 designate wedge-shaped keys the shanks of which are inserted in the openings to frictionally engage with the outer walls of the said openings and the outer edges of the shanks of the substantially U-shaped members 5 to lock the said U-shaped members upon the tie.
From practice it has been found that the frictional contact of the keys with the shanks of the U-shaped members is sufficient to retain the said members in proper position upon the tie, but it is to be understood that if desired suitable means may be employed for locking the keys to the ties.
The rails R, as stated, and as clearly illus trated by the drawings, have their base portions disposed a suitable distance away from the shanks as well as from the hooks of the substantially U-shaped members 5, and when the rails are so positioned, we insert between the outer edges of the flanges thereof and the projecting portions of the U-shaped members 5, wedge plates 8. Each of these plates includes an outer straight portion 9., the inner wall of the same being inclined from one of the ends thereof to its opposite end, as indicated by the numeral 10, and formed with the plate is an angular flange 11, the said flange having its edge arranged at an inclination, so that the same is wider at the wider end of the plate than at the other end of the said flange, as indicated by the numeral 12. In addition to this the underface of the flange 11 is beveled from its widened to its reduced end, as indicated by the numeral 13, and the flange, adjacent its reduced end, is provided with athreaded orifice 1a which receives thethreaded shank of a binding element 15. .It will bereadily noted that by forcing the wedge member longitudinally of the rail, in one direction, the same will be forced laterally in the direction of the rail to tightly engage therewith and by adjusting the binding element the wedge plate may be thus effectively secured to the rail and the rail effectively locked to the tie. It will be apparent that any looseness between the rail and the fastening device may be compensated for by the adjustment of the wedge member and it will also be apparent that the wedge members by the removal of the binding elements, may be withdrawn from engagement between the angular or hooked end of the U- shaped member 5 and the rail, to permit of the separation of the rail from the tie, when occasion requires.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
1. In combination with a tie having openings therein, U-shaped members in the openings and projecting above the top of the tie, wedge members also within the openings and contacting with the U-shaped members for retaining the same upon the tie, and rails disposed upon the tie between the upper portions of the said U-shaped members, of means comprising wedging elements Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
disposed between the upper portion of the U-shaped members and the rails, and means -co'o'preratin'g between the said wedge members and the said rails for securing the wedge members upon the rails.
2. In combination with a tie having h00kshaped members upon the top thereof and rails disposed between and out of contact with the said hooleshaped members, of wedge plates designed to be forced between the hooks and the base flanges of the rails, each of said wedge plates including an outer straight surface having its inner edge beveled from one of its ends to its opposite end, a flange formed uponthe said straight surface and having its edge bevel-ed from one of its ends to its opposite ends, and its underface likewise beveled from one of its ends to its opposite end, an adjustable element associated with the flange, and said element designed to frictionally contact with the flanges of the rails to bind the element upon the rails and to secure the rails upon the tie.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures. I
WILLIAM FQRBES, JOS; T. HUBBARD Washington, D. C.
