ARVID SAARI, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
RAILWAY-TIE PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
Application filed August I, 1913. Serial No. 782,504.
Be it known that I, Anvil) SAARI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis, in the State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railway-Tie Plates, which is hereby designated as a rail plate and look.
This invention covers and omprehend; a certain new and useful improvement and the invention which has for its object a useful, durable and eflicient lock and plate for fastening railroad rails to the ties upon which they are laid so that the rails cannot be displaced or turn over but will remain firmly secured to the ties.
For a full understanding of the invention following description andthe accompanying drawings. i
Figure 1 is a view in cross-section showing my invention secured to a rail and cross-tie. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking device, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line CD of Fig. 2.
In the drawing 1 indicates a rectangular shaped plate provided with apertures 11 through which the ordinary rail securing spike may be driven to secure the plate upon a. railway cross-tie, and on the under surface of the plate I .form projections 1 4 which are adapted to penetrate the tie and hold the same in proper position after the spikes are driven into the tie. I also provide the rectangular shaped plate with the rectangular aperture, through which the,
The locking plate is provided with a base of a greater dimension than the aperture in the plate and with a projection which extends above and over the edge of the flange of the rail and is provided with an aperture through which apin Q is inserted to prevent the locking device-from becoming accidentally displaced from its position in the rectangular shaped plate. The locking device is also provided with a groove which is adapted to receive the edge of the flange of the rail and the portion of the rectangular shaped plate. or locking device, 2, seats in a recess formed around the bottom of the rectangular shaped plate, as shown in Fig. 4, thus providing a flush surface between the locking device and under surface of the plate.
In applying my invention to use, I' first secure the rectangular shaped plate; up -a cross-tie by inserting spikes through in: aperture 1-1 The rail is then sea-ted upon the plate after which the spike, 3, is inserted in the seat of the locking device and as the same is driven into the tie the locking device is forced in engagement with the flange of the rail,
loosening or'withdrawal of the spike.
It is believed that the constructioh, opera-.
tion and use of my device will be understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention which I claim is new, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described a tee tangular shaped plate provided w'th' apertures adapted to receive the-ordinary spike and having projections formed onthe bottom surface adapted to penetrate the surface of a cross-tie. said rectangular plate being also provided with a rectangular shaped aperture. :1 locking device provided with a base of a greater dimension than the aperture, and having a projection adapted to extend through the aperture in the plate, means for preventing accidental displacement of said locking device from said plate 2, extends.mandfimeansz. adapted to be inserted between the rear edge of the locking device and plate whereby the locking device is held in en gagement with the edge of the rail flange, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. ARVID SAARI. Witnesses: v
HJALMER ANDERSON, CHAS. ONKALO.
It is to be noted that the plate and can only be released by the
