Description

(3.,B. MOODY.
RAIL FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 10. 1916.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
CHURCHILL B. MOODY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
Application filed January 10, 1916. Serial No. 71,257.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHURCHILL B. MoonY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in rail fasteners and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with cement ties, and it is an object of the invention to provide a fastener of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a rail may be readily and effectively clamped in applied position.
The inventionconsists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved rail fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the r vice is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a rail fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of myv invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation with the coacting rail and tie in section, of my improved rail fastener as illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4.4 of Fig. 3.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, T denotes a portion of a tie molded of cement or the like and upon the upper sur face of which is arranged the platel provided with the rods 2 disposed within the tie T and, in addition to serving as a reinforce for the tie, afford an efiective means for maintaining the plate 1 in applied position. It is also of advantage to secure the plate 1 by the conventional bolts and nuts 3. As herein embodied the plate 1 is of rectangular form in plan and has struck from one end thereof the upstanding tongue 4 adapted to overlie a base flange F of a rail R, while the opposite end portion of the plate 1 is provided with the upstanding longitudinally disposed and transversely spaced lips or tongues 5, the inner ends of which being undercut, as at 6, to receive the wedge member IV, said wedge member being adapted tov coact with the clamping plate 7 underlying the rail R and plate 1, the upper surface of the tie T being provided with the recess or groove to receive said plate 7. The end of the plate 7 with which the wedge W coacts is provided with the upstanding flange 9 with which the wedge directly engages and. the intermediate portion of said flange as indicated at 10 is bent to overlie the adjacent flange F of the rail R, while the upper marginal portions of the flange 9 at opposite sides of the in-turned portions 10 are bent outwardly to afford the lips 12 to overlie the upper surface of the wedge W. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the rail R will be conveniently and effectively clamped to the tie T.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a rail fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and-it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
1. A rail fastener comprising a plate and having a tongue adapted to overlie the base flange of a rail, a second plate adapted to underlie the first named plate and provided with a flange adapted to overlie the second flange of a rail, the first named plate being provided with upstanding transversely spaced lips terminating in outwardly disposed extensions, and a wedge coacting with the lips and the second named plate, the extensions of the lips overlying the wedge.
2. A rail fastener comprising a plate provided with securing means and having a tongue adapted to overlie the base flange of being provided with extensions overlying a rail, a second plate adapted to underlie the p the wedge. 10 first named plate and provided with a flange In testimony whereof I hereunto aifiX my adapted to overlie the second flange of a signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
rail, the first named plate being provided CHURCHILL B. MOODY. With upstanding transversely spaced lips, Witnesses:
and a Wedge coacting With the lips and the J. F. WALLACE,
second named plate, said second named plate JAs. C MMING.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
