To all whom it may (5071mm Be it known that I, Unvnn L. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Camp-and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful. -lmprovenuents in Rail-Joints, of which following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in rail jo nts and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the meeting ends of rails are efiectively and conveniently maintained in assembled relation.
The invention .consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved rail joint whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an clevational view illustrating rail joint constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating certain details of the invention as herein embodied; and 3 a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-% of Fig. 2.

3 denotes a plate upon which the meeting ends of the rails are adapted to rest and the longitudinal marginal-portions of said plate 53 are provided with the upstanding flanges -l adapted to overlie the flanges 5 of the rails and to snugly engage the webs (3 thereof, and it is to be observed that the flanges 3 have their lower marginal portions 7 substantially vertical and the upper marginal portions thereof inclined inwardly as this arrangement been found toafl'ord a maximum ot'ethciency.
The under surface of the plate 3 is pro- 'vided with a longitudinally disposed groove nietalnnd substantially U-shapc in form and adapted to be seated within the elongated groove 8 with the stems 11 thereof disposed through the openings 9 and extending Within the registering recesses or sockets 2, whereby the meeting ends of the rails arebfiectively held against separation. The stems 11 are resilient and are normally disposed in upward converging planes whereby they are caused to positively contact with the beveled outer walls of the recesses or sockets 2 whereby the clamping member 10 is effectively maintained in operative position relative to the rails l and the plate It will also be understood that the resiliency of the stems 11 will compensate for the expansion or contraction of the rails 1 incident to the elements. It will also be understood that the clamping member 10 may be further held in applied position by positioning the plate 3 upon a tie.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a rail joint constructedin accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modil'ictxtion without material departure from the principlesaml spirit thereof and for this reason i do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

In combination with the meeting ends of rails provided with sockets in their under surfaces, a plate underlying the rails and provided with upstanding flanges adapted to enact with the flanges and webs of the rails, said plate being provided with openings adapted to register with the sockets in the rails, and a clamping member substan-. tially U-shape in form the stems thereof provided with upstanding flanges adapted to coact with the flanges and webs of the rails, said plate being provided with openings adapted to register with the sockets in the rails, and a clamping member substantially U-shape in form, the stems thereof being insertible through the openings in the plate and within the sockets of the rails when in register with said openings, the under surface of the plate intermediate the openings being grooved, the intermediate portion of the clamping member being seatable within said groove.
