ROBBERT vWHITLEY THVEATT, OF COPPELL, TEXAS.
RAI LWAY-Tl E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,174, dated August 4, 1903. Application led January 12, 1903. Serial No. 138,794. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern: p
Be it known that I, ROBBERT WHITLEY THWEATT, of Coppell, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Railway-Tie, of which the following is a full and eXact description.
My invention relates to the improvements in metallic railway-ties; and the object of my invention is to produce a cheap, convenient, and substantial tie that may be firmly secured in the road-bed and which will hold the rails in such a manner that they cannotbe accidentally displaced.
My invention consists in a railway-tie, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a tie embodying my invention. The dotted lines show where the rails cross the tie. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, showing the rails in recess and clamped down securely. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line m m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of lip-head rail-clamp, with nut.
The tie 7 is provided with a broad base 8, which is adapted to rest firmly upon the roadbed, and has holes, as shown at 9, so that it may be secured with bolts or spikes upon a bridge.
The tie 7 has a thin center or bridge 10 eX- tending the full length of the tie and is provided on top with a rib 11 with iianges 12. The iianges 12 are provided with a recess 13 which is the proper width and depth to receive the base of rail, so when the clamps 14 are turned around over the base of the rail said clamp will hold rail securely, so it cannot be displaced. The Iianges 12 are provided with holes or perforations 15, disposed at opposite sides of the rail-receiving recess 13. These holes are adapted to receive clamping-bolts 14, each provided at its upper end with a lip or linger which engages over the base of the rail, and at its lower threaded end, beneath the iiange 12, with a set-nut, which bears upon said ange and is operable for drawing the bolt 14 downward to clamp the rails securely in the recess 13 and maintain it firmly in position upon the tie. This clamp 14, Fig. 4," may be put in the tie at the factory, with the lip turned on a line with the edge of the recess 13 and the nut secured down taut, and when the rail is placed in the recess 13 it only requires a stroke with the hammer to turn the lip around over the base of the rail, forming a perfect clamp for the rails. The holes 15 are to be used for additional rail-clamps, if found necessary.
From the foregoing description it will read.- ily be seen that the rail may be quickly and easily secured to the tie.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a tie comprising a base, a head and a connecting-web, of a rail supported by the tie, said tie being provided at the point of intersection of the rail with a rail-receivin g recess and lateral flanges, the latter having perforations disposed at opposite sides of the rail, and clamping-bolts extended through said perforations and provided at their upper ends with lips or lingers engaging over the base of the rail and at their lower ends each with a nut bearing beneath the flange and operable for drawing the bolts downward to clamp the rail securely in the recess.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
ROBBERT WHITLEY THWEATT.
