E E. E1;
I awe/whoa L. Gruene/nfeLd/er UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE GRUENENFELDER, OF PIERRON, ILLINOIS.
METALLIC RAILWAY-TIE.
Application filed May 26, 1913.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE GRUENEN- FELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierron, in the county of Bond, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in metallic railway ties, and has for its object to provide a device of this character, which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one which can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metallic railway tie with novel means for securing the rails thereto.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 8-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 4- l of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the tie which has a flanged base 2, the upper surfaces of which are beveled, as at 3. Formed integral wit-h the central portion of the base 2 is a vertical web 4;, the upper edge of which terminates in a head 5, the sides of which overhang the sides of the web 4. Formed adjacent each end of the head 5 is a recess 6, the base of which is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
Serial No. 770,018.
provided with spaced grooves 7, which result in the treads 8, and upon which the flanged base of the rail 9 rests, while the lower edges of the fish plates 10 engage the grooves 7. The head 5 has formed at its outer ends the thickened portions 11, the purpose of which will appear later.
The fish plates 10 are provided with notches 12, which are adapted to register with the openings 18, which extend through the head 5 and thickened portions 11, so that when the usual spikes 14 are engaged in the notches and openings the lower ends thereof may be bent into engagement with the lower edges of the thickened portions 11, thereby efi'ectually fastening the rails and fish plates to the tie.
WVhat is claimed is A metallic railway tie comprising a base, a web formed integral'therewith and having a head formed upon its upper edge, thickened portions formed at the ends of the head, recesses formed adjacent the ends of the head, the bases of which being provided with transverse grooves, treads formed in the recesses for supporting the flanged base of the rails, fish plates engaging the rails and having their lower edges engaging said grooves, spikes engaging the fish plates and passing through the head and thickened portions, said spikes having their lower ends bent into engagement with the lower edges of the thickened portions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE GRUENENFELDER.
