Be it known that I, CHARLES BEcKElr'a. il-
waukee in the county of Milwaukee and State.' of Wisconsin,-have invented new and useful Improvements'in'v Rail-Clamps, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in railway construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide simple but effective means for securing a raill upon a tie. With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides inthe construction, combination, and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In thedrawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partlyin section, of a tie constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrating the means for securing a rail thereto, Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional'view' approXimately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. The tie employed with my improvement is preferably constructed of plastic material, the same being of the proper length andwidth and is reinforced by. a pluralityof longitudinally extending bars 12 as well as metallic members 13, the same being curved l by the upon themselves to provide a plurality o-f convolutions and the said convolutions are arranged adjacent the inner sides of the reinforcing rods v12, as clearly illustratedzin Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. 'The tie preferably has its central portion curved upwardly, providing the lower face of said tie with a transverse arched portion 18, so that the said tie may be readily received within the road-bed and effectively t-amped therein to prevent both the Vlateral and llongitudinal movement thereof. The longitudinal edges of the tie are preferably beveled, as indicated by the numerals 20, and tle sides of the tief are continued for a suitable distance above the said beveled corners Q in vertical and parallel planes, as indicated numerals 21, and from thence the said sides are beveled inwardly toward the horizontally straight top o'f the tie' which is disposed to the opposite ends thereof. This rocker plate is provided adjacent its ends with openings 10 and'll, each ladapted to receive theends of cross sect-ionally rectangular bolts 15 and 16 respectively, the bolt 16 being provided with a head which abuts against the lower 'face of the rocker plate 5 and both of said bolts15 and 16 project through substantially rectangular openings and y in the tie proper and also extend through openings in the tie plate 2, the said openings being `disposed at the juncture of the inclined flanges 2a with the base proper of the said plate, so that'the rods contact with the opposite edges of the rails 1.
The numeral 9 designates a washer which is arranged to surround the rounded' and upper end 4 of the bolt 16 and the numeral 18 designates a nut for the said threaded and rounded end 4 of the said bolt 16. The
bolt 15 isprovided with a lateral head 3 which' contacts with one of the edges of the base ange of each of the rails 1, and the opposite'end of said bolt 15 is provided/l that the washer 9 contacts with the base of the rail 1 opposite that engaged by the head 3. and it will be understood that the bolt.15 ma)v be arranged upon the rail and the ail positioned upon the plate 2, after which the bolt 16. which, itshould be stated, is previously arranged within the opening 10 of the rocker plate 'may be drawn upwardly ot' the tie and the washer 9 inserted thereon. Thereafter the nut 18 is applied to the threaded portion l. the nut adjusted to force the washer 9 against the base iange of the rail. and thus eit'ectiveljY secure the rail upon the tie.
It will be further noted that the bolts 15 and 16 are arranged angularlv with relation to each other so that no direct vertical pull will be exerted eit-her upon the head of 'the bolt 15 or the washer 9 of the bolt 1G and as a consequence the liabilit;v of the aecidental separation of the nuts from the bolts will be reduced to a minimum if not entirely obviated. and further. if desired, the nut majY be rigidi)v secured to the bolt 15.
Having thus described the invention, what Fclaim is:
1. rlhe combination with a tie having a depression in the underface thereof. and a rod secured in the tie and passing through the depression, a rocker plate fulcrumed upon the rod, a rail upon the tie above the rocker plate, and angularljf arranged rods adjustabl)Y connected with the rocker plate and engaging with the edges of the rail.
