BAIL JOINT, CHAIR, AND TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application filed September 25, 1907. Serial No. 394,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FRAMPTON, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Willis, in the county of Montgomery and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improveme'nts in Rail Joints, Chairs, and Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail oints, chairs and ties, and one of the rincipal objects of the same is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means to prevent the rails from spreading or sinking at the joints.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal tie designed to pass through the rail chairs at the rail joints, said tie having a rib on the under side thereof which bears at its opposite ends against said chairs.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a rail joint and tie made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the rail joints. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction. indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention the numerals 1 designate the meeting ends of a'pair of railway rails and 2, .2 designate the two sections or members of the rail chair. Fish plates 3 are formed on the upper portions of the members 2 and a recess is formed in the chair for the base flange 4 of the rails.
A metal tie 5 comprising a flat steel plate is provided with a centrally disposed rib 6 upon its lower side, said rib hearing at its ends against the inner sides of the rail chair as at 7, Fig. 3. The tie 5 extends through the chair members 2 immediately under the joint of the rails and bolts 8 extend vertically through the chair members and through the tie and are provided with nuts 9 underneath the chair members. Bolts 10 extend through the fish plates 3.
Transverse brace rods 11 extend thr ugh my invention will firmly hold the meetingends of railway rails and will eiiectively prevent sinking or spreading of the rails at the joints.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a deviceof the character described, rail chairs, comprising inner and outer sections, fish plates formed upon the chair sections, a rail tie extending through the chair sections and bolted thereto, and brace rods extending through said rail chairs, and provided with adjusting nuts.
2. In a device of the character described, rail chairs, a rail tie extending through said chairs, brace rods extending through said chairs upon opposite sides of said tie, and tubes through which said brace rods extend, said tubes being disposed between said chairs, and nuts upon the outer ends of said roc s.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- JOSEPH FRAMPTQN.
