Rain-JOINT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLIE E. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to rail joints, and consists in the peculiar and advantageous joint, hereinafter described and claimed, embodying fish-plates adapted to receive the bases and support the heads of adjoining rails, and a protective plate, cal culated to bridge the joint so as to afford a continuous wheel-support and prevent pounding, and also calculated to afford a strong resistance against lateral outward pressure against the inner sides of the adjoining portions of the rails.

The rails 1 are of the ordinary well-known type, and at opposite sides of the adjoining portions of the same are fish-plates 2. These latter have lower portions 3 that receive the bases of the rails, and upright portions 4 that hear at 5 011 the rail bases and against the rail webs and at 6 against the undersides of the rail heads and against the webs, so as to strongly support the heads and adequately brace the upper portions of the webs against lateral pressure.

Disposed on and against the outer fishplates and also against the outer sides of the rail heads is the protective plate 8 which is preferably'of rolled steel and of a length suflicient to enable the clamps comprised in the joint to rest at opposite sides of a ten inch sleeper when the joint occurs over a sleeper. The said protective plate extends upwardly to a point slightly above the tread portions of the rails and has beveled ends 9 Specification of Letters Patent. readily pass on passage of the same over the joint between the rails.

Extending through elongated apertures in the protective plate and also extending through registering apertures in the fish 7 plates and the webs of the rails are bolts 14:, equipped with the ordinary, well known nuts 15.

My novel joint in addition to the advantages hereinbefore ascribed to it is simple and inexpensive in construction and is well adapted'to withstand the shocks and strains to which rail joints are ordinarily subjected.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V

1. The herein described rail joint, comprising adjoining rails, fish-plates having lower portions constructed and arranged to receive the bases of the rails and also having upright 7 portions interposed between the rail bases and heads and bearing adjacent to the bases and heads against the webs, a protective plate arranged against the outer sides of the rail heads and bearing on the lower portion of the outer fish-plate and also bearing against the outermost portion of the outer fish-p1ate, bolts arranged transversely below the fishplates and having hook engaging one of the fish-plates and also having threaded portions, nuts on said threaded portions, connecting bolts extending through the rails and plates and clamping members mounted on the threaded portions of the bolts inside the nuts and engaging the other'fish-plate.
