Description

ARCI-IIBALD I-IEZEKIAE GLASSCOGK, ARTHUR VAUGHAN GLASSCOCK, AND WILLIAM MELTON, or JEMIsonaLA A A. 5
JOHN
RAILWAY-RAIL FASTENING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARGHIBALD H. GLASS- coon, ARTHUR V. GLAsscooK, and JOH W. MnL'roN, citizens of the United States, re-
siding at Jemison, in the county of Chiltonand State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fastenings; and We dohereby declare the following to be a .full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railroad construction and particularly to rail fastening devices. 7 I
The main object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that will brace the rail on both sides and prevent twisting thereof under the strain of a heavy train passing thereover.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing spreading of the rails.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa device constructed in accordancewith our invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention applied to a tie.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the fastening members.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the tie plate with the fastening members removed, and
Fig. 5 is a top plan of a fastening member.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 indicates the usual railway tie, to which is secured the metallic tie plate 2, said plate being of a length equal to the length of the tie to which it is secured, and having upwardly extending securing blocks 2 and 3, formed adja cent the ends thereof. Lugs 1 are also provided on the plate 2, but in spaced relation Specification of Lettersratent. PatentedDec. 1S, 1917, Application filed April 28, 1917. Serial No. 165,198.
with the securing blocks 2 and 3. The opposed faces of these securing blocks 2 and- 3 are beveled as at 5, to cooperate with the beveled surfaces '6 of the fastening members 7 the inner ends of which engage the flange 8 of the rail 9, and clamp the same therebetween. Each of these fastening members 7 is provided with a dependmg lug 7 the inner faces of which are under to cooperate with the under faces of the lugs 4 and there by prevent vertical movement of the fastening members with relation to the tie plate The base 10 of the rail 9 lies between the lugs 44 on the plate 2, and the opposed faces of said lugs l are inclined toward the rail 9 to'receive the correspondingly inclined lug 12, formed on the fastening members 7, and it will be seen that in applying the fastening members 7 it is only necessary to slide them in position between the lugs at and securing blocks 2' and 3.
In operation, a tie plate 2 is secured to the tie by suitable means, such as spikes pass-- ing through the central openings 14, formed in the plate. The rails 9 are then positioned between the lugs 1. The fastening members 7 are then applied and secured against displacement by means of spikes 13 passing through openings 14 formed in the members 7 What we claim to be new is 1. In a rail fastening device, a plate having securing blocks adjacent its respective ends, the inner walls of said blocks being beveled, securing blocks secured to the plate in spaced relation with the first mentioned securing blocks and having each a beveled wall, fastening members, each of which has beveled surfaces cooperating with the beveled surfaces of the securing blocks, and means extending through the fastening members and tie plate for securing the fastening members and tie plate to a railway tie.
2. In combination with a railway tie, aftie plate supported on the upper surface thereof, securing blocks on the tie plate adjacent 7 each end thereof and having beveled faces, 1
In testimony whereof We hereunto affix 10 our signatures 1n presence of two Witnesses.
ARCHIBALD HEZEKIAH GLASSUOOK. ARTHUR VAUGHAN GLASSCOCK. JOHN WILLIAM MELTON.
lugs on the tie plate and positioned between the securing blocks, said lugs having inclined under faces, fastening members cooperating With the securing blocks and adapted to clamp av rail therebetween, and said fastening members having depending inclined lugs cooperating with the lugs on the Witnesses: tie plate for preventing vertical movement B.
