Be it known that I, Lnwrs A. Sronnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cross-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ties for railway rails.
The primary object of the invention is the peculiar construction of the metallic tie which is provided with adjustable rail securing elements, the said elements being insulated from the'ties proper.
The invention further resides in the construction, combination and-arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved tie, showing the same having two rails secured thereon, Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view through one end of the tie, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one end of the tie showing one of the rail engaging clamps in position and the outer end of the clamp sustaining frame or box removed, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the rail engaging members.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates my improved tie which is constructed of steel, and which in the process of manufacture is molded to provide its underface with a longitudinally extending groove 2, the walls of which being rounded. The top of the tie is centrally provided with a horizontally fiat portion 3, and the sides of the tie are curved downwardly from the said fiat portion as designated by the numerals 4. The tie thus formed may be of any length and cut to provide a number of ties of the desired length. The flat face 3 adjacent the opposite ends of the tie is provided with a plate of insulated material 5, which is secured to the tie in any desired manner.
Rigidly secured to each of the insulated plates 5 is a substantially rectangular frame 6. The cross members or ends of the frame may be removable, and connected through the medium of suitable bolts or screws with the longitudinal members of the frame, and the said longitudinal members have their inner faces beveled or inclined from their upper edges downwardly and outwardly. The side members of the frames thus provide a substantially clove-tailed passage for the reception of the angular sides 7 of rail engaging members 8. The members 8 each comprises a body which has its upper face flush with the tops of the sides of the frame, the said upper portion of the box providing bearing members for the rails R. The bodies of the members 8 are formed with overlying flanges 9 which are shaped to conform to the base flanges of the rails with which they are adapted to engage. The end members of each of the frames are centrally provided with threaded openings for the reception of adjusting elements in the nature of headed screws 10 which bear against the opposite ends of the body portions of the two members 8 arranged within each of the frames 6. The threaded members 10 are provided with lock nuts 11 which, when the rail members are adjusted against the rails to properly space the said rails, are screwed against the ends of the frames.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
l. The combination with a metallic tie having its upper face provided adjacent its ends with insulated plates, rectangular metallic frames arranged upon the plates and secured to the tie and plates, said frames having removable ends, slidable rail engaging members within the frames, and adjustable and securing members for the rail engaging members.
2. In combination with a metallic tie having its upper face adjacent its ends provided with insulated plates, of a rectangular frame arranged upon each of the plates and secured to the said plates and to the ties, the end members of the frames being removably secured to the side members of the frame, the side members having their inner walls beveled, rail engaging members within the frames, said members being arranged in pairs and providing each a body having angular sides which co-act with the angular side members of the frame, each of the bodies having an overlying flange which conforms to the shape of the base flanges of into engagement with the end members of the rails and engages with the said base the frames. flanges of the rails, the end members having In testimony whereof I aflix my signature threaded openings, headed threaded 'memin presence of two witnesses.
