Description

I. ALTHOUSE.
RAILWAY RAIL FASTENING. APPLICATION IILED'OOT. a1, 1911.
1,053,264. Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
/3 I /3 41 L :2, 3 3 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ISAAC PARK ALTHOUSE, OF QUARRYVILIJE, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-RAIL, FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1911. Serial No. 657,833;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC PARK .ALT- HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quarryville, in the county of Lancaster and.State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fastenings, of which the following is.a specification.
My invention relates to means for securing railroad rails and ties to each other, and the object thereof is to produce'a device of said character adapted to prevent the spreading of the rails? I A further object thereof is to secure the rails from slipping laterally on the ties, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and etficient device of said class than has heretofore been produced. i
In the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a ground plan View of my in'vention,,Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse or end elevation showing the tie in cross section;
My invention includes, generally, apair of side plates adapted to be clamped upon a railroad tie on each of which is seated'the rail, a plurality of screw threaded studs on' the upper face of the side plates on both sides of the rail seat, a buttress plate secured on each of the side plates adapted to bear against the outer faces of the base and web and tread of the rails, and a cross brace having T-ends adapted to bear against the inner faces "of the .base and web of the rails and secured upon the upper faces of the side plates, and other details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and set forth.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicat-es a railroad tie of ordinary form. Adjacent to each end of the tie are secured thereon the side plates 2, having the depending ends 3 which embrace the sides of the tie and on which are provided the depending screw threaded lugs 4 adapted to register with slots in the ends of the yokes 6 which embrace the lower face and part of the sides of the tie by being secured by the.
nuts 7.
. Upon the upper face of each side plate 2- are two pairs or sets of vertically pro ecting of the rails adapted to clamp the base of threaded studs 8 and 9, the studs 8 being said pIates-ther on, tresses remova 1y secured upon said side outside the rail seat and the studs 9 being inside thereof or between-the two rails carried on the" tie. f f
For the purpose of preventing the spread ing' of the rails, I provide buttresses 10 on the outer side of each rail 11 secured upon the side plates 2. Said buttresses comprise the plates 12, pierced to register with the studs 8, and held thereon by the nuts 13. The inner edge 14: of each plate is adapted to bear against the web of the rail and the lower face is beveled'at 15 to bearupon the top of the base, and the shoulder 16 engages the edge of the base as shown. Upon the top faces of the plates 12 and between the orifices therein. I provide a projecting shoulder 17, preferably integral with the plate adapted to bear upon the outer face of the web of the rail and the under face of 4 the tread to support the rail in uprightposition.
For the purpose of maintaining theproper gage between the rails. and for locking the side plates together. I provide the cross bar 18, which, as shown. is provided with T- plates 19 at each end. which are suitably beveled and shaped to bear upon the top and edge of theba'ses on the inner sides of the rails. Said T-p'lates are provided-with spaced orifices to register with the studs 9 on the side plates and are secured thereon by the nuts 20.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the accompanying drawings, it
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
will be apparent that the rails are carried upon side plates clamped upon the ties; that they are supported and secured against lateral. displacement by the buttress plates secured upon the side plates: that they are supported and secured at'the proper gage by the intermediate cross bar, and that the opposite side plates bearing on the rails are locked together by the said cross bar to support and prevent shifting in either direction.
I claim:
The combination with side plates clamped upon a railroad tie adjacent to its ends, a.
rail seat upon each side plate and studs upon each side ofsaid seats, yokes embrac ing the lower face of the tie for securing clamping plates and but plates, comprising clamps on the outer sides the i'eil and' befif. agaiiist the' outer face of thelweb. of e achrai l, substantially as deth web -land the; under face of the tread scribedg thereof, and a cross bar between the rails haying T-shaped'nds provided with orifices A K ALTHOUS 1!,- afiaptml t0 register with the studs on the Witnesses;
side plates on the inner side of the rails, I SAML. A. KEEN:
ada'ptedto chimp the base and .bear. against Y JOHN M. NIssLY.
ge e; o1 this petentm'ay be ebtained for the cents each, by-address ing'the Commissioner of mum, Washington, ;I D. 0.
