Description
E. MINER.
RAIL FASTENER.
ENOCH MINER, OF ELEM GROVE,
PENNSYLVANIA.
EAIL-FASTENER.
Application filed. January 17, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ENOGH MINER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Elem Grove, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specifioation.
This invention relates to rail fasteners for railway ties; and it has for its primary object the provision of means for securely fastening the rails to the tie without the einployment of rail spikes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character for simplifying the Operation of Connecting the rail with or removing the same from the tie.
Tith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion ofthe tie, showing the application of the fastener thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse section therethrough; and Fig. l is a perspective view of the securing key.
The tie 1 may be constructed of Concrete. metal, wood or any other suitable material which may be preferred.
As the opposite ends of the tie are identically formed, only one end of the tie is shown and with particular reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it is described that the tie is provided with a chair 2, a fixed clamping lug 3 and a removable elamping block 4. In addition to the block 4, the tie is provided with a lug 5 having a recess fixed therein which receives a reduced portion 7 of the removable block 4. The said block 4; is provided with an angularly disposed surface 8 similar to the surface 9 on the lug 8, and whereby the latter and the former may be properly engaged with the adjacent surfaces of the base flange of the rail. The reduced portion 7 of the removable blockfic is provided with a pair of Vertical passages 10-10 which are adapted to underlie similar passages 11,11 formed in the fiXed lug 5 of the tie. securing key 12 is provided for the purpose of securing the block 4 to the tie and as illustrated said key consists of a substantially U-portion or head 13 having` sides Specification of Letters Patent.

l 111-, from which cylindrical stems l-lextend, shoulders being provided at the juncture of the steins with the head for spacing the top portion of the head from the tie for alle-wing the insertion of an instrument therein for removing the key. These stems are adapted to be extended through the passages 10-10, 11-11 hereinbefore refer-red to after the block 4: is properly adjustcd against the rail. Through this arrangement it is obviously seen that the rail may be securely fastened to the tie without the employment of spikes or the like that are adapted to take anchorage in the tie. ift is further evident that the Operation of applying the rail to or removing` the same from the tie is extremely Simplified and the block 4 is held against moving laterally of the rail as will. be understood.
The terminals or free ends of the branches 15 of the securing key are extended into receiving passages 16 formed in the tie beneath the portions 7 of the block l.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and Operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring` a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I claim:-
A rail tie provided with a pair of Vertical rising lugs, a block slidable on the tie and having a portion extending beneath one of the lugs, the portion beneath one of said lugs being provided with a pair of Vertical apertures, and a fastening key having a rectangular head of substantially inverted U- form, provided with a pair of parallel cylindrical stems7 shoulders being provided at the `iuncture of the stems with the head for spacing a portion of said head from the tie, the said stems extending through the openings in the sliding block, and through the adjacent lugs in the lower portion of the tie. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ENQCH MINER.
