RAIL-TIE OR SLEEPER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, STEVEN Mooronosr, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaIIungary, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties or Sleepers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to cross ties or sleepers for track rails and has for its object to provide a cross tie, which will be very simple, inexpensive and durable.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my new cross tie; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereon.

In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification, a, a denote a pair of track rails which are supported on my new cross tie or sleeper. The latter consists of a metal rail or main body 6 which at one side is formed with an upwardly projecting flange b and a downwardly projecting flange b the latter flange being adapted to be embedded in the ground, so as to prevent the tie from transversal displacement. The upper flange 7) serves as a reinforcement means and is formed with cross ribs 0, 0, 0 which extend therefrom to the rail 6. Projecting from the rail 6 near each end thereof are a pair of hook-shaped projections (Z for the engagement of clamping bars 6 for the track rails. The track rails are each supported on two wooden blocks f, one arranged at each side of a cross rib o and which wooden blocks are made high enough to project beyond the upper margin of the lateral flange b and the cross rib 0. ing the hook-shaped projections (Z and permitting of a lateral adjustment of the clamping bars 6, so that differently sized rails may be secured in position on the cross tie. The clamping bars are adjusted by means of screw bolts 9 which are passed through perforations in the clamping bars 0, the wooden blocks f and cross rib c.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A cross tie or sleeper for track rails consisting of a main body or rail having at one side upwardly and downwardly projecting flanges, cross ribs extending from the upwardly projecting flange to the main body, a wooden block placed on each side of said cross rib and which extends beyond the upper margin of the said upwardly projecting flange and cross rib, the two blocks being adapted to support the track rail and ad justable clamping means on the main body for the track rail.

2. A. cross tie or sleeper for track rails consist-ing of a main body or rail having at one side upwardly and downwardly proj ecting flanges, cross ribs extending from the upwardly projecting flange to the main body, a wooden block placed on each side of said cross rib and which extends beyond the upper margin of the said upwardly project ing flange and cross rib, the two blocks being adapted to support the track rail, hook-- shaped projections on the main body at each side of a cross rib, and adjustable clamping bars for the track rails engaging said projections.
