RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,028, dated May 12, 1903.
Application fi e ugust 4, 1902. Serial No. 118,316. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern; 7
Be it known that LJESSE T. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to-the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to railroad-ties, and particularly to metallic railroad-ties, and embodies a tie so formed that it will brace the rails and also form when desired a rail-joint which will hold the meeting ends of rails together without the use of fish-plates.
As will be seen from the following description and claim, the tie is simply constructed and includes means for firmly attaching the rails thereto by the use of an integral brace and clip on the outside of the rail and removable clips on the inside of the rails bolted to the tie.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie, and Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof. 7
Referring specifically to the drawings, the tie comprises a skeleton frame 6, the openings through which extend horizontally from side to side. Solid blocks '7 are formed at the places where the rails rest on the tie, the rails being indicated at 8, and these blocks are extended upwardly on the outside of the rails, as at 7 and are properly shaped to lie upon the base of the rail and against the web and head thereof, thereby forming rail-braces and clips for theoutside of the rail Detachable clips 9 join the rails to the tie on the inside and are held by bolts 10, which extend diagonally through the clips and through the blocks 7 under the rails, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The heads of the bolts are preferably countersunk in the bottom of the blocks, and the clips are beveled, as at 9*, to be square with the nuts 10 on the bolts. The slant of the bolts has the effect of binding or forcing the rails against the braces on the outside, and as the braces are formed in one piece with the body of the tie spreading of the rails is effectively prevented.
The tie is preferably formed of cast-iron and is made in skeleton form for the sake of cheapness and lightness. It may of course be made solid throughout. and clips is ordinarily enough to stand the strain and hold the rails, because the pressure is mainly received by the braces on the outside.
In forming a joint the rails are made to meet at a tie, and they are halved and lapped vertically, as shown at one end in Fig. 1. The ends of both rails thus rest on the tie and are clamped between the block, the brace, and the clip. No fish-plates are necessary to hold the joint.
In laying the track the ties are sunk in the bed to the rails, or thereabout, and the few and simple parts permit cheap and rapid track-laying.
What I claim as new is A metallicn'ailroad-tie comprising a onepiece skeleton frame having solid blocks under the rails and integral clips and braces for the outside of the rails, said frame being open transversely from end to end except at the blocks, detachable clips for the inside of the rails, and bolts for the clips extending diagonally through the blocks from top to bottom of the tie, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE T. SHAW.
