a RAILWAY-TIE AND, .rnsrnnnn.
To all whomit concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR Q flannnann, I
a citizen of the United States, residing at Provo in the county of Utah and Sta-te of Utah, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Fasteners, of which the'following is a specification.
.The purpose of my invention is to provide ametal railway tie and fastener therefor, which is? economical in construction, light in welght, easily placed andsecured 1n position and which has the broad bearing surface and cushioneffect so muchdesired.
The said bloeks contacting with 1 portion 8 thereof bent spending to the angleof the basefian e of These objects I accomplish withlthe device illustrated invthe. accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference inthcate liliefparts throughout the several figures, and which are hereinafter"descr bed n the specifications forming a part of this-applicatlon. I
Figure 1 1s alongitudinal.section thron 'h the middle of the tie.v Y Fig, 2 is an isomet 1c view of one'of the locking members. Fig.
3 1s ail-isometric viewer? one end of the'tie, parts cut away, Fig. i s an KSUIDOUIC VZQW of one of the clamping plates. Fig. is an isometric View of one end of the tie and a portion of a rail in the tie cut away.
My tie is made from a sheet of metal, and bent to form an upturned c -annel 't. Said channel has transverse 5 1: 2. cutin the bottom thereof to recei bot nn portion of the clamps and. the l Said channel also upper e l of the s place thercoin a part oi s open cuts 5 in the .lcs within which cuts the basellange of the rail A placed and within which. cuts the shonlderil 'ot' the clamps 3 titted. material. T are placed within each end por' tion of said channel 1 between the cuts 5, and an: held tl'icrein by the said clamps 3, and on which therail A, ismade to rest.
the said cuts 5 to prevent the rails from the sides of the channel 1, and to supply the resiliency or cushion effect under the rails made from' a sheet of metal and are in thickness practically one-half the width of the said transverse cuts 2,.and each has a at an angle correthe rail. The upper portion of each 0 amp is left wlder than the saldchannel l, to form a shoulder 9 on each sidei' The bottom por 1 of i Specification of Letters Patent. f a l cation-filed October 3, 1911.
At oneend they are bent I to form a shoulder 12, and centrally through 'ings 13, each Mung member 4.
Blocks: of wood or fibrous extend above the bottom of The said clamps 3 are each within the beveled Patented Jan. 1e, 1912. serial-no. 652,652.]
within the said transverse slc s 2, and centrally located. in-each of said clamps is cut a slotted opening beveled. The locking members 4'. are cutfrom a sheet of metal practically the same thickness as the said clamps 3 and in width the same asthc portion 11 of said clamps.
said locking members are cut slotted open having its edges beveled. The said slotted openings 10 and 13 are so located in said. clamps and locking members respectively, that when the said. placed within the said channel with theipor tions 8 engaging slots 2, and the said locking members are placed within said slots 2 with the said shoulder 12 engaging the bottomcf said channel, and with their sides adjacent the said clan1ps3 the said slotted openings 10 and 13 only partially register. WVithin the opening 14 in said blocks '7 and tthroughthe partially registering holes 10 and 13 is horizontallyv placed a bolt 15 having aconeshaped head 16 on one end and a portion of the other end threaded. On saidthreaded end of said bolt and openings 10 and 13 cally shaped nut 17.. sulate the rail. A, strips of. insulating material 18 are placed between the said block 7 and the base of the rail with the edges bent to fit between the said'clamps 3 and the base of the rail. With the locking members en is fitted a frusto-conimg of the said nut 17 on the said bolt 15 in the direction to' tighten the said bolt, will cause the head of the bolt inthe openings Y10 and 13, this will draw the said clamps 3 down and they Will hold the rail firmly on the tie. The seating of the broadest portion of the clamps 3, at the shoulder 9, in the open cuts 5 will prevent the spreading of the rails. The contact of the nut portions of the said openings 10 and 13 will'act as a: lock and prevent the nuts 17 from jarring loose.
Having thus described. my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim:- 1
1. A railway ti'eland' fastener consisting an upturned metal'chaimel, spacerl -apart or hole 10 having its edges upon themselves clamps are tion 11 of each of said clamp is cut to fit i the base flange of the rail and the bottom portion 11' in the'said within the said slotted If it is desired to ingaging the bottom of the channel the turnsliding of the nut and of the partial registering transverse slots in the bottom of said channel, open cuts in the edges of said channel, cushion blocks in said channel of the same length as the space'between the said trans verse slots and thicker than the height of the said channel at said open cuts and having a horizontal opening therethrough, clamps having an elongated beveled opening ineach and a portion of each bent to engage the base flange of a rail, a lug 011 the bottom of each of said clamps adapted to fit within one of said transverse slots, extended portions of said clamps forming lugs adapted to engage within said open cuts to prevent lateral outward movement of said clamps, locking members having a portion of each bent upon itself and adapted to fit within one of said transverse slots and at the side of one of said lugs on the bottom of said clamps, partial registering elongated slots in sand clamps and said locking members having the top and bottom of each slot outwardly beveled, a bolt having a cone shaped head placed horizontally through said elongated slots and said cushion blocks, and a fruslo conically shaped nut on said bolt and adapted to be operated within said partially registered slots.
1. In a railway tie and fastener the combination of an upturned metal channel having transverse slots in the bottom thereof, clamps adapted to extend through said slots and with the upper portion of each bent to engage the base flange of a rail, an elongated circular opening in each of said clamps having the top and bottom thereof outwardly beveled, locking members adapted to engage the bottom of said channel and. having an elongated circular opening in each with the top and bottom outwardly beveled and with the sides of said opening registering with the sides of the opening in the clamp adjacent and with the top and bottom not registering when the said clamps and locking members are in positiomcushion blocks between each pair of clamps having bolt adapted to slide in said partially registering openings in said clamps and locking members to make the said openings more nearly register.
3. In a railway tie and fastener the com bination of an upturned metal channel, transverse slots in the bottom thereof, blocks between said transverse slots, clamps engaging the base flange of a rail each having an elongated c rcular opening therein with the top and bottom thereof outwardly beveled and adapted to be moved vertically in one of said transverse slots, locking mem bers adapted to engage the bottom of said channel and each having an elongated circular opening therein with the top and bottom outwardly beveled and with the sides of said opening registering with the sides of the opening in the clamp adjacent but with the top and bottom not registering, and a bolt and conically shaped nut thereon adapted to bind said clamps and locking members on said blocks and to d aw said clamps downward as well as inward and to cause said openings to more nearly register.
In testimony whereof]. have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
