GEORGE VRANAY, OF BRADDGCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED RAIL TIE, CHAIR, AND JOINT.
Application filed June 10, 1914.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon VRANAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rail Ties, Chairs, and Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined rail tie, chair and joint, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for supporting a pair of track rails upon a road bed as well as providing means for connecting the opposing ends of a pair of track rails together without the employment of nuts or bolts, at the same time providing for the necessary contraction and expansion due to climatic influences.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combined rail tie, chair and joint, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily 'set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a combined tie, chair and joint in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan broken away.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 3 de notes a tie which is formed out of any suitable material, preferably concrete and has its top face formed with a depressed portion providing a seat 1 and a pair of shoulders 5 and 6. The seat 4, between its center and the shoulder 6, has a longitudinally extend ing pocket 7 and said seat fl: at the shoulder 5 has a longitudinally extending pocket 8. Mounted upon the seat 4: is a chair plate 9, having a pair of depending flanges 10 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915. Serial No. 844,238.
11, the former extending into the pocket 7, and the latter into the pocket 8. One side of the chair plate 9 is of greater thickness than the other side as indicated at 12, and projects above the top of the tie 3.
The reference characters 13 and 14: denote a pair of track rails and each includes a head 15, web 16 and base 17, the latter being seated upon the plate 9 and having one edge flushed with the flange 10.
Formed integral with the enlarged side of the plate 9 is a base flange 18 of a fish plate 19. The latter extends from the flange 18 to the heads 15 of the rails 13 and 1%. The base flange 18 of the fish plate 19 is mounted upon one side of the bases 17 of the rails 13 and 14:. The fish plate 19 is positioned at one side of the rails 13 and 14, and positioned upon the other side of said rail is a fish plate 20, having a base flange 21, which engages the bases 17 of the rails 13 and 1a.
Formed integral with the base flange 21 and mounted upon the seat 1, and abutting against the bases 17 of the rails 13, and further abutting against the plate 9 is a locking member 22, which is fixedly secured in position through the medium of a series of holdfast devices mounted in the tie 3, and engaging in the locking member 22. The holdfast devices prevent longitudinal movement of the locking member 22 while the latter prevents lateral movement of the track rails, as well as the chair plate.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a tie body having a depression in the top face thereof, to form a seat and side shoulders, said seat being provided witha pair of longitudinal pockets, one of which is contiguous with a side shoulder; of a chair plate provided at its ends with depending flanges snugly fitting in said pockets and abutting one of said side shoulders, an extension on one side of the chair plate adapted to overlap the base flanges of a rail and forming a fish plate for one side thereof, a locking plate between the other side shoulder and said chair plate, an additional extension on said locking plate adapted to overlap the opposite base flanges of a rail and also forming a fish plate therefor, and fastening means between said locking plate and the adjacent side shoulder of the tie body.
2. The combination with a tie body having a depression in the top face thereof, to
form a seat and side shoulders, said seat being provided with a pair of longitudinal pockets, one of which is contiguous with a side shoulder; of a chair plate provided at its ends with depending flanges snugly fitting in said pockets and abutting one of said side shoulders, an extension on one side of the chair plate adapted to overlap'the base flanges of a rail and forming a fish plate for one side thereof, a locking plate between the other side shoulder and said chair plate, an additional extension on said locking plate adapted to overlap the opposite base flanges of a rail and also forming. a fish plate there- Gopies of this patent maybe obtained for for, the outer side edge of the locking plate being provided with threaded sockets and set screws insrted'tliiroiigh the adjacent side shoulder of the tie body and engaged With said threaded sockets to secure said locking plate and the other parts of the device in position.
