RAILWAY-TIE.
Application filed July 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCYAN KARPOWIGZ, subject of the Czar of Russla, reslding at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway ties.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tie for railway rails which is ties are operatively positioned.
A further object of the device is the pro vision of a tie formed of any desirable material such as wood or concrete and presentlng a sharpened upper edge when operatlvely positioned in its binding connection between the track rails and thereby serviceable as a cattle guard as well as assisting in preventing. the use of-the railroad track as a Walk for pedestrians.
A still further object of the device isto provide a tie having a plurality of supporting bases operatively positioned and thereby positioning the rail engaging means at the required height for attachment with different sized rails.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device operatively engaging the opposite rails shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a track section partially broken away and showing three of the present form of ties in position and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the tie operatively positioned.

The tie member consists of a beam or girder 11 triangular in cross-section when formed of any desired material such as wood or concrete and adapted for positioning between the rails 10 and arranged perpendicularly thereto and having its opposite ends engaging the inner faces of the base fianges'l2 of the rails.
The tie 11 is provided with passages 13, 14 and 15 which are arranged longitudinally extending-through the said tie and adjacent thethree edges 16, 17 and 18 thereof.
A binding rod 19 is adapted to be positioned through the desired passage of the tie 11 and has its opposite ends extending through perforations 20 arranged substantially central of the webs 21 of the rails. A
spacing sleeve 22 is carried by the rod 19 between the rail webs 21 and the adjacent ends of the tie 11, while lock nuts 23 are screw-threaded upon theopposite free ends of the rod 19, thus firmly securing the tie and sleeves and rails together.
The present tie is 'made adaptable for different heights of rails, which it will be understood will thereby have their web perforations 23 arranged at different heights and this is accomplished by having the tie passages of difierent distances from the opposite face or operative base of the tie. In
other words, the passage 13 is of less dis-' tance from the opposite base face 24 of the tie which face lies opposite the edge 16 thereof, while the passage 14: is at a greater distance from its base face 25 lying opposite the edge 17 and the passage 15 is a still greater distance from its base face 26, and lies opposite the third edge 18 of the tie.
With the tie positioned upon the base 24; thereof, the tie will be serviceable in connection with rails having their web perforations 20 of a certain height above the foundation for the rails and tie while the tie will be positioned for rails of greater dimensions when the tie is seated upon its base 26 and the rod .18 extends through the tie pas sage 15 and positions the said rod at a greater height from the supporting road bed such as 27 and in position to be secured through the central perforations of the Web of the rails which the tie connects.
It will be also noted that either of the bases 24:, 25 and 26 may be employed when desired with any size of rails some of these arrangements however positioning the base above or below the lower supporting surface of the rails. It is also noted that the passages 13, 14 and 15 lying at diflerent distances from the operable base face of the tie are at different distancesfrom the adjacent edges 16, 17 and 18 respectively of the tie.
A serviceable tie is thus provided which is cheap and easy to manufacture, but which at the same time constitutes an adequate securing means for the rails in forming the track and the tie is adjustable for different sizes of rails.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor a changes may be made therein without deoperatively positioned, and rail-engaging means at the opposite ends of the said rod.
